why separate (surname) page?

I suppose there's some good reason -- just curious. Why break the people out to a separate page? I suppose it's because of the overall length of a combined page, but that doesn't seem to me to justify the annoyance of having to link through to a second page when you're after a person. Also, what if you had someone whose given name (not surname) was Gage. Where would he or she go? There also seem to be ambiguities or errors e.g. John Gage (Emergency!), firefighter/paramedic from the television show Emergency! is on the main dab, while other fictional characters are on the surname dab.
