Want to add a mention of first warblog

For the sake of history, I'd like to add a mention of the first known warblog that I have found, which I made public on the Internet at the same time as the 6 June 1996 website launch of www.birzeit.edu [1]. It had been written and coded since November 1995, but was not available online internationally until 6 June 1996. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine didn't pick up the blog for another four months, on the same day it picked up the main university website, 22 October 1996.

At that time it was located in a privately maintained subdirectory off Birzeit University's main website at birzeit.edu/diary/. LOL, can you imagine a university allowing that these days?

  • (Don't know if you already know this, but) for this to be added to the article there has to actually be a source (news article, book, tracking organization, etc.) saying it's the first (or a very early) warblog, per the original research policy.

Please include Diaryland in the "...late 1990s..." discussion as an early blog platform

Mention of the online diary platform Diaryland should be inserted into the paragraph that begins "The emergence and growth of blogs in the late 1990s..." Canadian developer Andrew Smales rolled out Diaryland in 1999. It was an early blog platform for anyone to use. Sounds like a good addition. Are you aware of any sources that meet WP:RS we could use to cite the information? The Diaryland Wikipedia article is poorly sourced and I think very likely to be deleted if that does not change. MrOllie (talk) 20:24, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Well, my source is the Diaryland site itself, the developer Andrew Smales himself, and the fact that I've been a user of Diaryland for 26 years, practically since day one. I read the "conflict of interest" material, and it says, "The COI guideline does not absolutely prohibit people with a connection to a subject from editing articles on that subject. Editors who have such a connection can still comply with the COI guideline by discussing proposed article changes first, or by making uncontroversial edits." That's me exactly. I have a connection and expertise, but of course I don't get paid.
What I mean by "the Diaryland site itself": Really the only info needed in the existing post is on the About page: https://diaryland.com/about/ That is, the fact that it began in 1999 and that it's been upgraded as of May 2026.

What do you think? Also, I wrote the blurb on Diaryland. How can I make it better sourced? I read all about the sources that meet WP:RS that we could use to cite the information...do the above articles meet the requirements? I couldn't tell, as I said--first day.
What was in the Diaryland Wiki before (and has bugged me for years) was inaccurate, and listed no sources at all. It mischaracterized Diaryland as a "microblogging" platform. It most certainly is not and has never been. Microblogging is like Facebook, Twitter/X, and Tumblr. So my edit is an improvement, factual, and accurate.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything we can do with self published materials (everything from medium.com and diaryland itself). We need something like newspapers, books from major publishers, etc. Salon and Vice are a start but do not really support highlighting Diaryland in particular on this article - Salon doesn't even call it a blog, and Vice paints a picture of a site that has faded into obscurity and has no relevance.
