Software framework and Application Framework
I've thought that Application Framework is a Software Framework, designed and developed for a particular Application. Software framework is broder in a sense that include third party frameworks. I could be wrong.
Reading the two articales Application framework and Software framework, it is not clear what is the difference between the two. If those are the same, or simular it should be stated, or may be merged. Ervinn 17:51, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
I know a systamatic framework is a way of analysing written articles for the purpose of writing a better article.
Definition is wrong
To my knowledge this definition of an application framework ist not correct. There exist several terms in this context, which have to be distinguished:
- application framework
- class library
- component
MFC is a class library, an not a framework!
The definition of an application framework is:
- it is a reusable partial application, which can be extended to create a custom application
- it is targeted to a particular technology
- it implements a control flow
In comparison to a class library, a class library like MVC
- is not technology centered
- does not implement a control flow
For reference I quote Johnson, "Designing reusable classes", 1988. The definition in "software framework" is more correct, and the two entries should be merged, although the term "software framework" is not familiar to myself.
To my understanding, a reusable class library is not necessarly qualify for a framework. An easy way to decide if a class library could be a framework is to see if the library has a call-back to your application. If there are no call-backs, then the library is definetally not a framework, just a reusable library.
An other criteria for frameworks, is that a framework suppose to limit the choices during development, in other words a framework should give/force a standard direction to follow ("implements a control flow").
May be we should define ,here at the wiki site, the differences between the "Application Framewroks" and "Software Frameworks", and hopefully the industry will follow. (This is just a thought.) Ervinn 15:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, there is no definition given. Stepaniuk (talk) 17:06, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
Software framework taxonomy
I'm trying to organize the various types of software frameworks, and I would appreciate input from contributors to this article as well. See Talk:Software framework#Software framework taxonomy Ian Bailey 05:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Framework in Plain English
I'm going to remove this section. This isnt the Simple English Wikipedia; I don't think we need two completely seperate sections explaining what an app framework is, especially since one uses an analogy to describe it which strikes me as very informal and unencylopedic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.223.243.95 (talk) 23:58, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
