The siege of Panhala, 1692–1694, was a conflict that was part of the Deccan wars and Maratha conquests. In 1692, the Mughal army under Jahandar Shah marched into Maratha territory to reduce the fort of Panhala, but he was repulsed after the reinforcement of vast Maratha troops for Panhala.

Background

Just after death of Sambhaji and surrender of Raigad, the Maratha state fell into confusion and temporary decline. Taking advantage of the situation, Aurangzeb despatched Zulfiqar Khan Nusrat Jung to capture Panhala fort. Although he was repulsed by a brave Maratha commander Ghatge in the Siege of Panhala 1690.

Although later Ghatge surrendered the fort to Zulfiqar, but Dhanaji Jadhav again recaptured Panhala fort from Mughals in 1692.[2]

Battle

Aurangzeb sent his grandson Jahandar Shah to laid the Siege of Panhala and to recapture the Panhala fort from the Marathas. The Marathas held out the fort till October 1693, and Jadhav was again detached with a vast army to recapture Panhala fort. Jadhav inflicted a defeat on the besiegers and the Mughals were finally expelled in March 1694.[1]
