The office of Sheriff of Newcastle upon Tyne existed from 1400 (625 years ago) (1400) until local government reorganisation in 1974 (51 years ago) (1974), and was reintroduced in 1996 (29 years ago) (1996) as a title held additionally by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne.[1] The city has a sheriff because it was historically a county corporate.
In 1950 Violet Grantham became the first woman to hold the office (becoming the first female Lord Mayor two years later),[2] and in 2019 Councillor Habib Rahman became the first BAME person to hold the office.[3][4]
