Moses Banja
Venarable Canon Moses Banja is the current Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, having been enthroned in 2023. He succeeded Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, who served since 2009.
Bishop Moses Banja (Born on October 20, 1964) is the current Anglican Bishop and the 6th Bishop of Namirembe Diocese. He was elected on November 20, 2023.[1]
Early life and education
Moses is the eighth child of the late Eriya Wamala Ntume and the late Christine Wamala of Nakabbugo Bbira Village, Busiro, Wakiso District. Raised in a large family of 14 children, his parents were devout Christians who actively served in their local church, with his father working in the printery section of the Uganda Bookshop.[2]
Banja started his education at Bogere Nursery in Kampala, and later attended Bbira Primary School, Wakiso, Kassanda Muslim Boarding Primary School, Mackay High School Natete also known as Mackay Memorial College, and Makerere College where he sat for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UAEC) examinations. He offered Divinity, Economics, Geography and Luganda. In 1992, he joined Makerere University and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in Divinity. In 1996, he enrolled for a post graduate diploma in education at Makerere University and graduated.[3] He was awarded a post graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Edinburgh.

Ordination and early ministry
His Ministry work started during his high school days at Makerere College School when he accepted Jesus Christ in 1989. Upon completing his high school studies, he joined Uganda Christian University, formerly Bishop Tucker Theological College.
In December 1996, he was ordained a deacon and a priest in 1998. He was posted to Gayaza High School as the school chaplain and a teacher of Christian Religious Education (CRE), Physical Education (PE) and Luganda language. He also worked as school chaplain at Gayaza Junior School and also conducted prayers at Our Lady of Good Counsel, a Catholic-founded school that had a big population of Anglican students.[3]
He served at Gayaza High School between 1996 and December 2000 and on January 1, 2001, he was posted to St Stephen’s Church Luzira as Assistant Vicar of Luzira Parish.
Bishop of Namirembe
Ven. Canon Moses Banja was elected Bishop of Namirembe Diocese by the House of Bishops during its sitting at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Naluwerere in East Busoga Diocese on November 20th, 2023. He was consecrated and enthroned on December 10, 2023, at St Paul's Cathedral, Namirembe to replace Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira who had been at the helm of the diocese for the last 14 years.[1]
Personal life
Bishop Moses Banja tied the knot with is wife Rev. Canon. Prof. Olivia Nassaka, at St Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe on April 21, 2001 and together, they have three children.[3]
