The Morávka originates in the territory of Morávka in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids at an elevation of 861 m (2,825 ft) and flows to Staré Město, where it merges with the Ostravice River at an elevation of 288 m (945 ft). It is 29.6 km (18.4 mi) long.[2] Its drainage basin has an area of 149.3 km2 (57.6 sq mi).[3]
In Vyšní Lhoty, part of the river divides and flows through the Morávka–Žermanice canal (also called Vyšní Lhoty–Žermanice canal), which connects the Morávka with the Lučina River. The canal was built in 1953–1958 and has a length of 7.5 km (4.7 mi). Its purpose is to strengthen the flood protection of settlements on the lower course of the Morávka.[4]
