Michael Shevell

Michael Shevell is a Canadian pediatric neurologist, clinician-scientist, and academic physician specializing in neurodevelopmental disabilities,[1] neonatal neurology, and pediatric neuroethics.[2][3]

He is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery at McGill University and an attending physician in the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Montreal Children's Hospital-McGill University Health Centre.[4] He is a former President of the Canadian Association of Child Neurology and Councillor of the Child Neurology Society.[5] Since 2014, He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.[6]

Early life and education

He was born in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, Canada in 1958. He completed his secondary education at Wagar High School in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, graduating in 1975.[7] He subsequently attended Marianopolis College, where he earned a Diploma of College Studies (D.E.C.) in Health Sciences in 1977.[5] He then enrolled at McGill University, receiving a Bachelor of Science (1980) before earning the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (MD, CM) in 1984. Following medical school, Shevell completed postgraduate residency training in pediatrics and pediatric neurology at McGill University.[8]

Career

Shevell joined the faculty of McGill University in 1991 as an assistant professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery. Concurrently, he was appointed to the attending staff of the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Montreal Children's Hospital, where he established a tertiary hospital-based clinical practice specializing in neurodevelopmental disabilities and the identification of newborns at risk for neurodevelopmental sequelae.[9]

Shevell was promoted to associate professor in 1996 and subsequently received a university geographic full-time appointment in 2000. In 2003 he was granted tenure, and in 2005 was promoted to Full Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery at McGill University.[7]

He served as Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology from 2008 to 2011 before being appointed Chair of McGill University's Department of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief at the Montreal Children's Hospital in November 2011.[8] Holding both of these positions as the inaugural Harvey Guyda Chair in Pediatrics until June 2021.[10]

Following completion of his term as department chair, Shevell continued his clinical and academic activities at McGill University and resumed transitional leadership of the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the Montreal Children's Hospital from 2025 to 2026.[5]

Shevell has edited multiple thematic issues of Seminars in Pediatric Neurology devoted to developmental delay, cerebral palsy, pediatric neuroethics, environmental influences on brain development, and emerging technologies in pediatric neurology.[11] He co-edited the Sixth and Seventh editions of Swaiman's Pediatric Neurology.[12]

Research

Shevell's research has focused on improving the diagnosis, understanding, and management of childhood neurodevelopmental disorders.[13] His work combines clinical investigation, epidemiology, genetics, neuroimaging, neurorehabilitation, and health services methodologies to improve outcomes for children with neurological disabilities.[2]

One of his principal areas of investigation has been global developmental delay[14] and intellectual developmental disorder.[15] His research has contributed to evidence-based approaches for evaluating children with developmental disabilities and identifying underlying genetic, metabolic, and neurological causes.[16] He was lead author of an adopted clinical practice parameter on the evaluation of young children with global developmental delay, endorsed by the American Academy of Neurology, the Child Neurology Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, which became an international reference for clinical practice.

Another major focus of Shevell's research has been cerebral palsy.[2] He has investigated its epidemiology, causation, classification, diagnosis, and long-term outcomes while promoting standardized approaches to clinical assessment and research.[3] He led or co-led the Canadian Cerebral Palsy Registry for over a quarter-century.[17]

He served as Project Lead for the Cerebral Palsy Demonstration Project within Canada's NeuroDevNet Network of Centres of Excellence.[5]

Shevell has also conducted research in neonatal neurology, particularly acquired neonatal brain injury and the identification of infants at risk for later neurodevelopmental sequelae.[18]
