Radio station in St. Louis
KSTL (690 kHz "Jubilee 690") is an AM station in St. Louis, Missouri, serving the Greater St. Louis area of Missouri and Illinois. It airs an urban gospel radio format and is owned and operated by Church of God in Christ, Inc. Some Christian talk and teaching programs are also heard. The studios are on Olive Boulevard in Creve Coeur, Missouri.[2]
By day, KSTL is powered at 1,000 watts. But 690 AM is a Canadian and Mexican clear channel frequency. To avoid interference with other stations, KSTL greatly reduces power at night to 18 watts. The transmitter is in East St. Louis, just north of the I-55/Illinois Route 3 interchange.
History
The station signed on the air on June 4, 1948; 76 years ago (1948-06-04). In its early decades, it was a daytimer station, required to go off the air at night. In the 1970s, it aired a country music format.[3]
KSTL's studios were formerly located on the historic Laclede's Landing in downtown Saint Louis. They later moved to the Saint Louis suburbs, in the same building as former sister station KJSL 630 AM. KSTL originally played only music, with KJSL broadcasting live and recorded Christian talk and teaching programs. KSTL expanded its format beyond Christian music and into teaching ministries in 1995, using its own separate studio.
The General Manager of the station in 1994 was Taft Harris. The Director of Operations was Juanita Winston who helmed the day-to-day operations for the station. In March 2004 Taft Harris was voted one of the Most Influential African-Americans in Radio by radioink.com. The current general manager is Katrina Chase.
