INS Ajay was the first warship^[1][2] built in Independent India^[3] and the namesake of the Ajay-class patrol vessels. She was built by the Hooghly Dock and Port Engineers (Now Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers) and was delivered to the Indian Navy on 21 September 1960.^{[citation needed]}

In July 1974 the Indian Navy gave her to the Bangladesh Navy.^[4] (Her sister ship INS Akshay (P3136) had been transferred as BNS Padma in 1973). INS Ajay served in the Bangladesh Navy as BNS Surma.^{[citation needed]}
