Faculty of Philology of the University of Pristina
Faculty of the University of Pristina
The Faculty of Philology is an academic unit within the University of Pristina. Established in 1988 after gaining independence from the Faculty of Philosophy, its roots can be traced back to the Higher Pedagogical School of Pristina (1958) and the Faculty of Philosophy (1960).[1]
History
The formation of the Faculty of Philology and its departments began in the academic year 1960/61, with the introduction of departments for Albanian language and literature, Serbo-Croatian language and Yugoslav literature. Subsequently, departments for English language and literature, Russian language and literature, French language and literature, and Orientalistics were added. The Turkish language department was established in 1989, followed by the German language department in 1992.[2]
In the framework of the Faculty of Philology, the Seminar on Albanian Culture for Foreigners was established in the academic year 1974/1975, which in 1979 changed its name to International Seminar of Albanian Language, Literature and Culture.[3] This seminar attracted many Albanologists and others from all over the world who were interested in the Albanian language and culture.[4][5]
During the years 1991-1999, the Faculty of Philology, excluding the departments of Serbo-Croatian language and literature and Russian language and literature, operated under challenging circumstances due to oppressive measures by the Serbian authorities. Presently, the faculty adheres to the European model of studies.[6]
The Faculty engages in educational and research activities across various departments, including Albanian language and literature, English language and literature, French language and literature, German language and literature, Turkish language and literature, Orientalistics, General and Comparative Literature, and Journalism. It offers academic programs at all three levels: bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.[7][8]
