Upsun, formerly known as Platform.sh, is a French platform-as-a-service (PaaS) company. It develops a cloud platform for developing, deploying and managing web applications.

History

Upsun was formerly known as Platform.sh,[1][2] a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) company founded in France in 2015 by Frédéric Plais, Damien Tournoud and Ori Pekelman.[3][4] The platform originated at Commerce Guys, where the technology had been developed before Platform.sh was established as a separate company.[5][6]

Platform.sh developed a platform for testing, deploying and managing web applications through automation of cloud infrastructure and deployment processes.[7][8] Initially hosted on Amazon Web Services, the platform was subsequently expanded to other cloud providers, including Microsoft Azure and Orange Business Services, and to additional programming languages and frameworks.[9][10]

Platform.sh operated with employees distributed across different countries. By 2019, it had 120 employees in 21 countries,[6] and by 2023, it had more than 300 employees distributed across multiple time zones.[11]

In 2018, Platform.sh raised $34 million in Series C funding.[7][12] The company acquired software performance monitoring company Blackfire.io in 2021,[3][13] and raised $140 million in Series D funding in 2022.[14][4]

In September 2025, Platform.sh was renamed Upsun.[1][2]

Platform

Upsun provides a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) for developing, deploying and managing web applications.[7][8] The platform automates infrastructure management and deployment processes.[10][8]

The platform provides development and pre-production environments based on production environments, allowing changes to be developed and tested before deployment.[10][9][8] It supports multiple cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and OVHcloud,[9][3] as well as multiple programming languages and frameworks.[10][9]

The platform also includes services such as databases, caching, messaging, monitoring and security features.[15] In 2025, artificial intelligence features were added, including AI-assisted configuration,[15] integration with coding assistants,[1][2] support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and tools for interacting with applications and infrastructure through natural language.[15]
