The Alice Project is an ambitious, five-part site-specific theatre production developed by the acclaimed Irish theatre company Asylum Productions. Funded primarily by the Kilkenny County Council Public Art Programme, the project provides an epic reimagining of the 14th-century Kilkenny Witch Trials. It explores the dark historical narrative of Dame Alice Kyteler, the first woman in Ireland to be tried for heresy, who escaped the city while her servant, Petronella de Meath, was convicted and burned alive in her place. Co-created by theatre artists Medb Lambert and Donal Gallagher alongside Once Off Productions, the multi-disciplinary spectacle transforms the entirety of Kilkenny City into a living stage through a combination of courtroom drama, open-air choreography, and community choir participation during the annual Kilkenny Arts Festival.

A key defining element of The Alice Project is its multi-location, site-specific format, which utilizes various historical venues and urban spaces throughout Kilkenny City. Rather than using a traditional theatre space, the five-part production is designed to map onto the physical geography of the 14th-century witch trials.

The large public civic space directly outside the castle gates acts as the setting for Episode 1: The Demon Dance, utilizing open-air public staging to engage festival crowds.

Located at Kilkenny Castle, the Parade Tower and its Medieval Room serve as the primary setting for Episode 2: The Words of Dred, utilizing the fortress architecture to ground the political and religious context of the trial.

The historic graveyard and interior spaces of the Medieval Mile Museum (the former St. Mary's Church) host Episode 3: The Words of Alice. This venue staging is framed as a clandestine, intimate one-to-one audience encounter with Dame Alice.

The Home Rule Club, historic premises located along the River Nore, this venue houses Episode 4: The Words of the Accused, which is staged in partnership with Barnstorm Youth Theatre to depict the trials of Alice's co-accused.

The grounds of St. Kieran's College host the final episode, Episode 5: The Burning (The Words of Petronella). This grand finale operates as a massive outdoor spectacle, utilizing a community choir, a large roving cast, and pyrotechnics to dramatize the public execution of Petronella de Meath.
