Brian Maps (Russian: Брайн Мапс; born Maksim Sergeyevich Tarasenko[2][3] on September 25, 1999, Kinel,[4] Samara Oblast or Uzbekistan[5]) is a Russian video blogger[6][1],[7] Let's Player, actor and screenwriter. He is the creator and owner of the eponymous YouTube channel "TheBrianMaps". He is one of the most popular video bloggers in the Russian-speaking segment of the YouTube video hosting platform.[8][9][10]

Biography

He was born on September 25, 1999, in Kinel, Samara Oblast[4] or in Uzbekistan.[5]

After finishing school, he moved to Saint Petersburg and then enrolled in the College of Film and Video Technology.[11]

YouTube career

Maxutko99

On July 10, 2011, Brian Maps's first YouTube channel[10] was created under the name "Maxutko99".[12][4] The channel featured videos on various topics: Let's Plays,[10] tutorials,[10] and reviews of internet videos.

Before Maksim created his first channel, he filmed an internet review show called "Tiger Show" with his friend,[13] which was a parody of Maxim Golopolosov's internet show "+100500", but "Tiger Show" featured plush toy animals. A total of 10 or 11 (no exact information) episodes of "Tiger Show" were filmed, of which episodes one through four, six, and eight have survived.

Videos on the "Maxutko99" channel[14] were released weekly. The last video on the channel was uploaded on June 2, 2012. The description of the last video contained a link to a new channel called "TheBrianMaps", and the "Maxutko99" channel was closed.

TheBrianMaps

On June 4, 2012, Tarasenko opened a new channel named "TheBrianMaps",[15] which he still runs. He began his creative journey with Let's Plays of the game Minecraft,[1] then transitioned to blogs, podcasts, and Let's Plays (of other games),[1] comedy sketches,[8] parodies of various shows, and music videos. Currently, he films lifestyle content and vlogs, and occasionally hosts streams.[6]

On April 29, 2014, Brian's channel crossed the threshold of 100 thousand subscribers,[16] and on November 23, 2015, he reached 2 million subscribers.[17]

After moving from Kinel to Saint Petersburg, Brian Maps began to actively develop by filming sketches for his channel.

In February 2016, he was one of four nominees (along with Masha Way, Sonya Yesman, and Katya Klap) for the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award in the category "Favorite Russian Video Blogger", but the award went to Sonya Yesman at the March ceremony.[18]

In July 2016, he won the first Russian video blogger contest #TwitterStar organized by Twitter, beating Katya Klap and Yan Gordienko. In the "Twitter vote", 1,268,291 votes (tweets) were cast for him, compared to 1,267,041 for Katya Klap and 66,930 for Yan Gordienko.[19]

As of mid-June 2017, the "TheBrianMaps" channel on YouTube had 5.3 million subscribers;[10] by mid-June 2018, it had 7.2 million;[6] and by the beginning of February 2019, over 9 million.[9] On April 9, 2019, he reached 10 million subscribers,[20] in connection with which he announced a exploitation short film timed to the anniversary, titled "The Last Button".[21] It was released on his channel on July 23, 2019, in the horror and comedy genres.

On October 23, 2019, a music video featuring Brian Maps in the image of Olivia, a character from his sketches, was released on Eldar Dzharakhov's channel.[22]

On December 20, 2020, during a live stream, Brian Maps announced his second short film, "The Last Button 2", which was published on his channel on June 3, 2021. This film effectively concluded the narrative of the sketch universe.[23] In the behind-the-scenes video for it, Maksim confirmed this fact.
