Tar Devils SC is an American semi-professional soccer club based in the Chapel Hill–Durham area of North Carolina. The club competes in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL).[1] Founded in 2021 by Alessandro Racioppi, Tar Devils SC was established to create a high-level competitive team representing the Triangle region.[2]
History
Tar Devils SC was founded in 2021 as a project by Alessandro Racioppi to build a strong soccer club in the Chapel Hill–Durham area, bringing together the best players in the area.[3]
After early years competing in local adult leagues, the club rose through increasingly competitive levels. In their debut season in the statewide semi-pro league, the North Carolina State League (NCSL), Tar Devils SC defeated most opponents during the regular season and subsequently advanced to the playoff final. They secured a 3–1 playoff win over Mint Hill’s first team in the semi-finals before narrowly losing 2–1 in the championship match after a deciding penalty.[4]
In mid-2025, Tar Devils SC joined the UPSL Mid-Atlantic Division as an expansion club.[5] The team is listed among the new clubs competing in the 2025 UPSL Division One Mid-Atlantic conference opening in Fall 2025. They are currently Mid-Atlantic UPSL Division 1 regular season champions. [6]
Club Identity and Community
According to their profile, Tar Devils SC aims to blend regional college-level talent (from local schools) with experienced players and former professionals to raise the competitive level for the Triangle area.[7]
The club is also described as community-oriented: its founder expressed a commitment to building a “brotherhood,” recruiting players based on character and commitment rather than just résumé, and offering opportunities for local soccer players to grow and develop.[8]
Honors & Notable Results
- Reached NCSL championship final (2025) — runners-up after a playoff run capped by a 3–1 semifinal win.[9]
- UPSL Mid-Atlantic Division Champions.[10]
Players and Recruitment
Tar Devils SC’s founding strategy included recruiting former college players, combining talent from local universities, and offering competitive adult soccer opportunities. Their 2025 roster includes a mix of players from varied backgrounds.[11]
According to the club, key priorities for recruitment are commitment, a growth mindset, coachability, and baseline high-level talent — with the aim to build a cohesive, long-term squad rather than a transient “mercenary” roster.[12]
