Stuart Grauer (born September 28, 1950) is an American educator, school founder, author, speaker, and educational consultant. He founded The Grauer School, an independent college-preparatory school in Encinitas, California, in 1991 and served as its Head of School until 2023, when he became Head of School Emeritus.[1][2] He has written books and articles on education, intentionally small schools, experiential education, educational leadership, relationship-based teaching and learning, and teacher development.

Early life and education

Grauer earned a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University before receiving master's degrees and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of San Diego.[3]

Career

Grauer taught history and other subjects in New York public schools before teaching at the International School of Bern in Switzerland.[citation needed] He later served as principal of the International School of Basel.[citation needed]

In 1991, Grauer founded The Grauer School in Encinitas, California, where he served as Head of School until 2023, when he became Head of School Emeritus.[4][5] In 2010, Grauer registered the U.S. trademark for the phrase Learn by Discovery for educational services.[6]

Grauer also founded the Small Schools Coalition, an organization supporting intentionally small schools.[7]

In 2026, The San Diego Union-Tribune profiled Grauer and his third book, The Way to Pancho's Kitchen, describing it as a guide to leadership in intentionally small schools that draws on stories from education and the natural world.[8]

Grauer has written on educational leadership, teacher development, intentionally small schools, and experiential education. Grauer has published three books on education. Real Teachers was reviewed in the Journal of Experiential Education.[9] Grauer has published three books on education.
