StoryTree, Inc. is a San Jose, California-based consumer technology company best known for its flagship brand SimplePrints, a mobile photo book creation service, and Impress, an iPhone-based business card printing application.[1]

Founding and early history

StoryTree, Inc. is a technology company launched out of the Stanford d.school in 2011 by Matt Sullivan, Zach Weiner, and Alexandre Oliveira, focused on helping families preserve and share personal memories. Sullivan had developed the concept while researching how the elderly could more easily share family histories,[2] drawing inspiration from StoryCorps and the goal of creating a collaborative digital storytelling community for families. [3] Weiner joined as co-founder while completing his senior year in Stanford's Computer Science department, [4] and the founders were noted as emblematic of a culture closely tied to app development and startup formation. [5]

The original StoryTree platform allowed families to build collaborative digital histories from pictures, videos, and text. [6] The company presented at the second 500 Startups Demo Day in August 2011 and was covered in the press, [7][8][9][10] and the StoryTree app was named a finalist for the SXSW Interactive Awards in 2012. [4]

SimplePrints

In December 2012, StoryTree launched SimplePrints, an iOS application for mobile photo book creation. [11][12] The idea grew from StoryTree users asking to print their story trees. Sullivan built on mobile first, as most users already had their photos on their phones, allowing them to complete a photo book in under 30 minutes — a contrast to the more time-consuming desktop experiences of competitors like Shutterfly. [12]

By November 2014, SimplePrints had surpassed one million iOS installs and bootstrapped to profitability, at which point it expanded to Android.[12] Growth was supported in part by a partnership with mobile marketing firm Fiksu, which used Facebook's app install ads to grow SimplePrints' user base by 70 percent in five months while cutting cost-per-install by 20 percent, with purchaser volume doubling around major gifting holidays. [13][14]

In July 2015, SimplePrints launched Photo Magic, an SMS-based concierge service allowing customers to create photo books entirely by text message, aimed at time-pressed millennials unfamiliar with traditional photo book creation.[15] The service has been reviewed by dedicated photo book publications, including the Photo Book Guru. [16]

Impress

Impress is a StoryTree, Inc. brand offering an iPhone-only business card printing application. Wirecutter (The New York Times) recommended it for iPhone-based ordering in its February 2026 guide to business card printing services, noting its mobile-first design, card preview tools, and iMessage-based customer service.[17]

Funding and investors

StoryTree received initial funding through 500 Startups and was among the first investments of the program's Designer Fund. [8] In March 2012, the company raised an angel round of less than $500,000 via AngelList, with investors including The Designer Fund, Christina A. Brodbeck of YouTube's founding team, Henry Parry-Okeden of Oakview Group, and Orchestra founder Gentry Underwood — after which SimplePrints grew to profitability without additional venture capital.
