Senken is a German company that operates a procurement platform for carbon credits in the voluntary carbon market. The company is headquartered in Berlin.[1][2]

History

Senken was founded in Berlin in March 2022. Its co-founders include Adrian Wons, the company's chief executive, and Djamel Mekibes.[1][2] Prior to founding the company, Wons had worked at EY and Continental AG.[1]

In January 2023, Senken raised US$7.5 million in a funding round led by Obvious Ventures, with participation from Offline Ventures, Inflection, Kraken Ventures and Climate Capital.[3][4]

Operations

The company initially operated a marketplace for tokenized carbon credits, allowing companies to compare, purchase and retire credits from verified climate projects.[1][3] It later developed a procurement model in which candidate projects are screened against a framework of more than 600 data points before credits are offered to buyers.[5]

In March 2024, Senken signed an offtake agreement with Exomad Green, a biochar producer based in Concepción, Bolivia, covering 81,600 tonnes of biochar carbon dioxide removal credits to be delivered between 2025 and 2028. The agreement was described at the time as one of the largest biochar transactions to date.[2][6]

In February 2026, the two companies signed a further agreement covering 105,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal between 2026 and 2028, intended for buyers in the aviation sector. The agreement brought the total contracted volume between the two companies to approximately US$30 million.[5][7]

In May 2026, Lufthansa Group entered a multi-year carbon removal offtake agreement arranged through Senken, covering direct air capture by Deep Sky in Canada, biochar by Exomad Green in Bolivia and regenerative agriculture by Klim in Germany, as part of a restructuring of the airline group's climate protection portfolio.[8][9]

Also in May 2026, Senken and the carbon data platform Sylvera published Buying Blind?, an analysis of carbon credit disclosures by DAX 40 companies under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. The report found that no company had disclosed project-level identifiers and that 45% of reported credits could not be matched to identifiable projects in public registries.[10]
