ScanSource, Inc. is an American distributor of technology products and services headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina. The company sells hardware, software, connectivity, and cloud services through channel partners such as value-added resellers, managed service providers, and independent sales agents rather than directly to end users.[1][2] Its shares have traded on the Nasdaq under the symbol SCSC since an initial public offering in 1994.[2]

History

ScanSource was founded in Greenville, South Carolina, in December 1992 by Steven Owings and Michael Baur as a distributor of barcode scanning and point of sale equipment that sold only to resellers, with early logistical support from Gates/FA Distributing.[2][3][4] The company completed an initial public offering on the Nasdaq in March 1994 that raised $4.6 million.[2] Owings served as chief executive officer from the company's founding until January 2000, when Baur, its first president, succeeded him.[4][3]

During the late 1990s and 2000s, ScanSource added distribution units for business telephony and communications equipment and expanded internationally, entering Latin America in 2001 and Europe in 2002.[2][5]

In August 2016, ScanSource agreed to acquire Intelisys, a distributor of business telecommunications and cloud services sold through independent sales agents, for an initial purchase price of approximately $83.6 million plus earn-out payments tied to performance over four years.[6] The purchase moved the company into technology services distribution and the agent sales channel.[7] In 2017, ScanSource acquired POS Portal, a supplier of payment devices, for approximately $145 million.[8] In July 2019, it acquired intY, a cloud services distributor based in Bristol, England, and its CASCADE platform.[9][10]

In August 2019, ScanSource announced plans to divest its hardware distribution businesses in Europe and Latin America.[11] In 2020, it sold its products businesses in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Peru, along with its Miami-based export operations, to Intcomex,[12] and sold its European and UK products distribution business to the private equity firm Ten Oaks Group for about $30 million.[13][11] The company retained its Brazilian operations and its cloud distribution business.[13][12]

In August 2024, ScanSource acquired Resourcive, a technology advisory firm, and Advantix, a wireless connectivity provider, for a combined initial purchase price of approximately $56.8 million plus earn-out payments.[14][15] In early 2026, the company combined the sales organizations of its hardware and services businesses.[16][17]

Operations

ScanSource reports two business segments: Specialty Technology Solutions, which distributes barcode, point-of-sale, payments, networking, and security hardware, and Intelisys & Advisory, which distributes connectivity and cloud services and provides technology advisory services.[1] For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, the company reported net sales of $3.04 billion and approximately 2,100 employees, with operations in North America and Brazil.[1]
