Dr. Sarah K (born Sarah Njeri Mwangi; 30 April 1971) is a Kenyan gospel singer, songwriter, and worship leader. She is regarded as one of the pioneers of contemporary gospel music in Kenya and has maintained a career spanning more than three decades.[1]

Early life

Sarah Njeri Mwangi was born in Nairobi, Kenya. She developed an interest in music through church participation at a young age, which later influenced her decision to pursue gospel music as a ministry and profession.[1]

Education

Sarah K holds a doctorate degree in theology and leadership, reflecting her involvement in Christian ministry in addition to music.[2]

Music career

Sarah K began her professional music career in the early 1990s. Her music is characterized by Christian worship themes and has been widely performed in churches, gospel concerts, and religious gatherings across Kenya and East Africa.[3]

She is known for songs such as Liseme, Hakuna Silaha, Usiyeshindwa, and Yote Yawezekana.[4]

Sarah K has been associated with large New Year crossover worship services in Kenya. In late 2025, she led a major crossover kesha held at Ruiru Stadium to usher in the 2026 New Year, drawing thousands of worshippers for prayer and praise celebrations.[6]

Sarah K has received recognition for her contribution to gospel music, including Groove Awards. Her song Hakuna Silaha was named Worship Song of the Year at the Groove Awards, and she has also received Female Artiste of the Year honours.[7]

Personal life

Sarah K married Samuel Mwangi Thubi in 1992. He is a pastor in the Anglican Church of Kenya. The couple has three children.[8]
