The Sandy Fire is a fast-moving wildfire burning in Simi Valley, California.[4] It was ignited on May 18, 2026, and has spread quickly to 836 acres (338 ha).[3]

Progression

The Sandy Fire began at 10:50 a.m. (PDT)[1] on May 18, 2026, near Sandy Avenue in Simi Valley, California.[5] By that morning, the fire had burned roughly 184 acres (74 ha), largely driven by Santa Ana winds between 10–20 miles per hour (16–32 km/h), with gusts of up to 35 mph (56 km/h).[2][1] The rapid growth and high-speed winds triggered evacuation orders across southern Simi Valley, including students at two elementary schools in the area.[2][5] After the students briefly sheltered in place at the school, they were moved to Simi Valley High School. Further evacuation warnings were issued near Thousand Oaks, and a temporary evacuation center at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park in Simi Valley.[5]

By 12 p.m., the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services reported that 8,443 structures were under mandatory evaucation orders, and 3,575 structures were placed under evacuation warnings;[6] this includes over 29,000 people under evacuation orders and 11,664 people under warnings.[1] The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, located in Simi Valley, closed at noon for the rest of May 18 due to the Sandy Fire.[7][6]

By 2 p.m., the fire had grown to 720 acres (290 ha) and roughly 500 firefighters had been deployed to fight it.[1][6] Since the Sandy Fire ignited, at least two structures have been burned, including one home.[2]

750 firefighters had worked overnight to fight the Sandy Fire.[8]

One home in Trickling Brook Court in Simi Valley was destroyed by the Sandy Fire;[8] at least one other structure has been burned as well.[2]

Simi Valley Unified School District closed its campuses and canceled all classes for May 19.[9]

The office of governor Gavin Newsom stated that he had been "briefed" on and is "actively monitoring" the Sandy Fire.[10]
