Rinaldo Hopf (born 30 June 1955) is a German artist, photographer, editor and curator, best known for his watercolours, photographs and curatorial projects exploring queer history and homoerotic imagery. He has exhibited internationally and is the long‑time editor of the anthology series Mein schwules Auge / My Gay Eye.[1]

Early life and education

Hopf was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, West Germany, in 1955. He attended a humanistic Gymnasium in Freiburg and later studied art, cultural anthropology and religious history in Freiburg, San Francisco and Bremen, graduating with honours in Bremen. During the 1980s he worked as a visual artist in San Francisco and Paris, including at the Atelier of Dedalo Montali, and as an art therapist in forensic institutions in San Francisco and West Berlin.

Work and themes

Hopf’s practice includes watercolour painting, drawing, photography and installation, often depicting homoerotic male nudes and scenes from queer subcultures. His work engages with queer history and community memory, creating colourful, idealised worlds that challenge norms of masculinity and sexuality.[2] In his photographic series such as Subversiv and Amore, Hopf portrays friends and members of the Berlin queer scene, combining intimate portraiture with references to art history and political resistance. Curators and critics have compared his documentary impulse to August Sander, noting his effort to chronicle queer communities in Berlin across generations.[3]

Editorial and curatorial projects

Hopf is co‑editor of the ongoing anthology Mein schwules Auge / My Gay Eye, an annual or thematic yearbook of gay erotic art and writing published by Konkursbuch Verlag. The series brings together visual artists, photographers and authors from different countries and has included special issues on topics such as the body and the Tom of Finland Foundation’s collection.

As a curator he has organised and co‑organised exhibitions of queer art in Germany and abroad, including projects at the Schwules Museum in Berlin and collaborations with archives and foundations. Through his connections with the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles he helped build an international network of queer artists and contributed to exhibitions and publications related to the foundation’s collection.
