Restitched is an upcoming puzzle-platform video game developed and published by Trixel Creative. It is a spiritual successor to the LittleBigPlanet series, focusing on user-generated content and featuring a robust level editor.
Gameplay
Restitched is a physics-based 2.5D puzzle platformer with an emphasis on content creation.[1] The player character, a teddy bear named Stuffy, can run, jump, crawl and climb specific objects. He can also utilize the Needle 'n Thread tool, using it as a sword or grappling hook, allowing Stuffy to attack and swing himself over hazards.[2]
The single-player campaign features worlds that demonstrate the possibilities of the game mechanics, all of which were created using the built-in level editor.[1] Restitched features Steam Workshop integration, allowing the players to upload their levels and download other community works.[2]
Restitched features extensive character customization; Stuffy can be equipped with various clothing items that can be dyed into any color of the player's choice.[1]
Development
Background
Trixel Creative is a community of creators then known for their contributions for games with user-generated content such as The Sims 4, Dreams and LittleBigPlanet. The latter series was pivotal for the company, with certain members discovering the series during their childhood and crediting it with helping them find new friends and pursue their game development careers. US-based member Halston Stephenson recalled playing the first LittleBigPlanet game on his cousin's PlayStation 3 when he was a child, describing the experience as "love at first sight". UK-based Ethan Hanbury stated that the game helped him "realise from a young age that making games was something anyone could do," and that he "still [talks] to so many people [he] originally met through the LBP community." US-based Julian Treveri shared similar experiences to Stephenson, having discovered the game via his neighbour and becoming "totally addicted" to its level editor.[3]
Design
Netherlands-based composer Thomas Voets argued that Restitched is to LittleBigPlanet what Parkitect is to RollerCoaster Tycoon, "a fresh, new take that modernises some stuff, but keeps the charm of the original largely intact, creating a fresh yet familiar experience." He also stated that his goal as a composer is to "make as many songs for the project as [he] can, so that people can really go wild with theming their levels." Stephenson expressed similar remarks, invisioning Restitched as "something original while still capturing the essence of LittleBigPlanet, [...] a new title free from the constraints of strict legal guidelines and community expectations."[3]
Timeline
Conception as LittleBigPlanet Restitched (2019-2020)
Restitched began its life as a LittleBigPlanet fan game titled LittleBigPlanet Restitched. The project originated when Treveri discovered an open-source code library for deforming objects, which was used to build a prototype on the Unity game engine. In early 2019, other developers inspired by the prototype were brought on board and LittleBigPlanet Restitched entered development. The first four months of development were dedicated to creating concepts, stickers and implementing the user interface. During the development, the team grew to 20 members, who started developing player controls, physics, and a material creation system. Stephenson stated that "everything started to come together after we had all worked separately for a few months, and it was magical."[3]
In November 2019, a reveal trailer was uploaded to YouTube. The trailer was praised by various outlets, with PCGamesN describing the game as looking "as charming as ever".[4] The original LittleBigPlanet development studio Media Molecule supported the project, helping the team to livestream it during the Tri-Expo 2019 event. Then-current LittleBigPlanet developer Sumo Digital endorsed the fan project, allowing the team to proceed with the development so long as the project would be non-commercial, and clearly labelled as unofficial. However, on January 17, 2020, Trixel Creative received a cease and desist letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe. The letter stated the reason behind the notice to be "commercialisation", which caused confusion among the developers, as the project remained non-commercial. Stephenson stated that although the takedown was unexpected given the support from the developers, they "always knew it was ultimately up to Sony's legal department to protect their IP."[3] A pseudonymous developer named Halxton previously stated that the team could rework the project into an original property in case of pressure from Sony.[4]
Rebranding as Restitched (2020-present)
After the cease and desist issued by Sony, the team quickly reworked the project, replacing LittleBigPlanet imagery and characters with original content: Sackboy was replaced with Stuffy and the project was renamed to Restitched, omitting the LittleBigPlanet trademark.[3] The rebranded game was announced in 2022.[1] On December 26, 2024, a trailer was released showcasing the gameplay and level editor,[1] though the developers assured that the project was still in alpha stage.[5]
