RedTail Golf Course, also known as RedTail Golf Center, is a public golf course in Beaverton, Oregon, United States. The course is owned by the City of Portland, is part of the Portland Parks & Recreation golf system,[1] and is operated by RYG LLC under a lease agreement that runs through 2042.[2]

The facility includes an 18-hole golf course, driving range, pro shop, practice facilities, lessons and junior programs.[3]

History

The property was formerly farmland before it was acquired by the City of Portland in 1954.[1] The city acquired the 163.76-acre site to create an 18-hole golf course after the closure of West Hills Golf Course.[1] The West Hills Golf Course site was used for the relocation of the Oregon Zoo, then known as the Washington Park Zoo.[1] The course was designed by Erv Thoreson, a landscape architect with the Park Bureau.[1] Construction began in 1966.[1] The first nine holes opened in May 1966, drawing an estimated 1,690 players in its first five days.[4] The city planned to complete the second nine holes in time for fall play.[4] The course was originally named Progress Downs.[1][5] The course opened in 1968 as an 18-hole facility.[1]

In 1999, Portland Parks & Recreation Golf Manager John Zoller redesigned the course into a 7,100-yard, 18-hole course with a covered and lighted driving range.[1] The course was renamed RedTail Golf Course after red-tailed hawks that nested in trees around the course.[1]

Course and facilities

RedTail has five sets of tees ranging from 4,260 to 7,107 yards.[6] The course scorecard lists a par of 72.[7] The course tour lists a course rating of 74.1, 45 bunkers and six lakes.[6] The course includes a double-deck driving range, putting greens, a chipping green, a pro shop, a club fitting station and food service.[8] A course review described RedTail as a long public course with water hazards on more than half of its holes and greens guarded by bunkers, knolls and steep sides.[8]

Proposed sale

In 2023, the Portland Diamond Project identified RedTail Golf Center and the Lloyd Center as possible sites for a Major League Baseball ballpark in Portland.[9] In 2024, members of the Portland Golf Advisory Committee asked city officials to state that none of Portland's golf courses were available for sale, arguing that losing RedTail, one of the city's most profitable courses, could affect the finances of the municipal golf system.[10]
