Pierre Lewis is an American musician and keyboardist associated with the early Minneapolis funk and soul scene. He is known for his work with the groups 94 East and The Lewis Connection, both of which have been associated with the development of the Minneapolis Sound. He later performed as a touring keyboardist with The Commodores.[1]
Early career
Lewis became active in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul music scene during the 1970s. As a teenager, he became involved with local funk and R&B musicians who were part of the community that later became associated with the Minneapolis Sound.[1]
Lewis was a keyboardist in 94 East, a Minneapolis funk group formed by Pepé Willie in 1975. Numero Group's historical documentation of the group identifies Lewis as a 16-year-old keyboard player who joined the band alongside bassist Wendell Thomas and drummer Dale Alexander.[2]
94 East is notable for its association with Prince during the period before Prince achieved international fame. The group's recordings documented an early stage of the Minneapolis funk scene that later became influential in popular music.[2]
The Lewis Connection
Lewis later formed The Lewis Connection with his brother André Lewis. The group recorded the album The Lewis Connection, originally released in 1979.[1]
The album gained renewed attention decades later among collectors of rare funk and soul recordings. Numero Group reissued the album as part of its archival work documenting Twin Cities funk and soul music.[3]
The recording is also notable for featuring contributions from Prince during his early career. Prince provided guitar and background vocals on the track "Got to Be Something Here."[1][3]
The reissue of The Lewis Connection received attention from music publications including Pitchfork, which discussed the group's place in the history of Minneapolis funk and its connection to Prince's early years.[4]
Association with Prince and the Minneapolis Sound
Lewis was part of the Minneapolis music community during the period when local musicians were developing the style later known as the Minneapolis Sound.[1]

The Commodores
