Phranque is a character who was portrayed by actor Jack Quaid in God of War Laufey (2027).

Conception and development

God of War Laufey (2027) director Ariel Lawrence stated that Phranque has always been a character. She added that Faye and Phranque were the two characters that were complete and in the Laufey pre-production when she returned to the studio in 2021 after working with the team for two years on the reboot until 2018, then she and Cory had discussed the difficulty of creating a human connection and showing concern for something that can be seen as an inanimate, non-personal object. She felt that Phranque provides some intriguing concepts as a companion. Phranque has always been that.[2] It was also stated that Phranque is one of the very first things created for Laufey and has always been a part of the story.[3]

Lawrence mentioned that the PVC mocap that actor Jack Quaid wore in the "Meet the Cast" video was mostly for show only. She clarified that they "mocap a little bit, like we have a marker for him to be able to be directional on set." However, it assists the team in determining the blocking, or where the actors should be standing, for each scene rather than actually translating the rig into a 3D model. She also stated that attaching a number of PVC pipes to Quaid is "not super required, but it is a lot of fun."[4]

Reception

During the character's reveal, the internet praised the character, with Rebekah Valentine of Kotaku describing it as "the most premier little guy I’ve seen this year so far."[5][6][7] According to Nathan Grayson of Aftermath, the cube's name is Phranque, which he finds amusing in this particular situation despite its obvious foolishness. He claimed that the cube wobbling next to and behind it completely fascinated him, rather than the violent balletics of a boss fight versus a red monster. The cube would then collapse into the boss's back with the force of an unspoiled, slightly ruined Jell-O mold, as if to exacerbate the damage caused by Laufey's sword swings. "To put it simply, I love the cube," he concluded.[8]
