ORCA Studio is an independent strategic brand studio founded in 2011 and based in Bristol, UK. Specialising in brand strategy, identity, and activation, the studio works primarily with ambitious enterprise and growth-stage service-led brands. ORCA is a Certified B Corporation and describes its mission as helping brands move with conviction through audacious creativity.[1]
History
ORCA was founded in 2011 by James Ewin and Joel Rosen, childhood friends who established the studio following their graduation from university. The studio initially operated as a partnership before incorporating as a limited company in 2015.[2] Ewin, a graphic designer by training, is the sole owner.
Since its founding, the studio has grown into a team of 6–15 people, building a client roster across commercial, cultural, and conservation sectors. Clients have included Roland DG, Juventus FC, St Austell Brewery, Somerset Council, the University of Bath, and Bristol Zoo Project, among others.[3]
In 2015, Ewin and Rosen co-founded Briefbox, an online educational platform designed to help aspiring designers build portfolios and gain employment through practice briefs, courses, and mentoring. At its peak, Briefbox grew to more than 35,000 members globally.[2] Following a period of restructuring during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ewin assumed sole ownership of ORCA, with Rosen taking full ownership of Briefbox.[2]
In February 2023, ORCA achieved B Corp certification, scoring 96.4 on the B Impact Assessment — well above the 80-point threshold required for certification.[4]
By 2026, ORCA had entered a strategic transition phase, focusing on enterprise and growth-stage B2B clients across complex service-led industries.
Recognition and press coverage
ORCA's work has been covered by a number of independent design and trade publications. In 2021, Design Week featured the studio's creative director James Ewin discussing the Mogul & Dram brand identity project, including the studio's approach to packaging design for the ready-to-drink seltzer category.[5] The same project was featured independently by The Dieline, an international packaging and branding publication.[6]
Creative Boom, a UK-based design magazine, has published multiple features on ORCA's work, including coverage of the studio's rebrand for Hop Union Brewery in 2022[7] and a brand identity project for St Austell Brewery's Harbour Beer House tap room series in 2024.[8]
Creativepool magazine published a Company Spotlight interview with founder James Ewin, covering the studio's founding, B Corp journey, Juventus campaign work, and approach to purpose-led brand building.[9]
Bristol Creative Industries featured ORCA in its "Balancing Profit & Purpose" editorial series, focusing on the studio's B Corp certification journey and approach to purpose-driven client work.[10]
Positioning and philosophy
ORCA describes its core positioning as: "Audacious creativity challenges visionary brands to move with conviction." The studio's brand essence is expressed as Audacious, and its brand archetype is that of the Rebel: challenging thoughtfully rather than chaotically.
Brand values
ORCA operates around five stated brand values:
- We will challenge — Delving into briefs, asking questions, and acting on insight with conviction.
- We choose progress over comfort — Bold decisions over safe ones; creativity that is audacious, not decorative.
- We pursue clarity relentlessly — Turning complexity into conviction, so brands have the confidence to lead.
- We are pragmatic optimists — Pairing insight with imagination and rigour with emotion.
- We sweat the small stuff — A belief in the power of detail across creative and operational work.
Awards
In 2023, ORCA received a Bronze award from the Creativepool Annual in the Packaging category for its work on the Hop Union Brewery brand identity and packaging redesign.[11]
In 2023, ORCA received a Bronze award from the World Brand Design Society in the Packaging Design – Product Redesign category for the Hop Union Brewery project.[12]
In 2026, ORCA received a Bronze award from the World Brand Design Society for its rebrand of Carbon Neutral Fuels.[13]
In 2026, ORCA received a Bronze in the Best Visual Identity from the Energy Sector category at the Transform Awards Europe, for its rebrand of Carbon Neutral Fuels, a UK-based sustainable aviation fuel producer.[14]
In 2025, ORCA won Gold in the Best Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Campaign category at the Alliance of Independent Agencies Awards for its 'No Matter Their Manners…' campaign for Pet Drugs Online.[15][16]
Accreditations and commitments
In addition to B Corp certification, ORCA holds a range of accreditations reflecting its approach to responsible business practice. These include Living Wage Employer status, membership of the Design Business Association (DBA), Bristol Creative Industries, and commitments through Clean Creatives, Surfers Against Sewage, Design Declares, the Better Business Act, and the Ecologi climate-positive workforce scheme.
