Michael Trainer is an American author, producer, podcast host, and entrepreneur known for co-creating the inaugural Global Citizen Festival in 2012 and for founding the media platform Peak Mind. His work has focused on human connection, wellbeing, and social impact.
Early life and education
Trainer was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Bowdoin College, where he competed on the varsity crew team and Division I ski team. He was later named a Freeman Fellow for study in Asia.
He later received a Fulbright Scholarship.
Trainer pursued graduate studies at Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and Teachers College, where he studied community development and social impact. While at Columbia, he received a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship and was named an Earth Institute Fellow.
Career
Live Below the Line
Trainer directed the Live Below the Line campaign, an anti-poverty initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds to address global poverty. Public participants in the campaign included Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman, Minka Kelly, and Malin Åkerman.[1][2]
United Against Malaria
Trainer later directed media for Malaria No More’s United Against Malaria initiative during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The campaign featured footballers including Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Kolo Touré.[3]
The initiative received the Global Campaign of the Year award at the 2014 PRWeek Awards.[4]
Global Citizen
Trainer served as inaugural United States Country Director at the Global Poverty Project, where he co-created the inaugural Global Citizen Festival and its associated digital platform.
The inaugural festival took place on September 29, 2012, on the Great Lawn of Central Park and featured performances by Neil Young, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, and John Legend.[5][6]
During the festival, Trainer presented the Global Citizen Award to Wilfrid Macena of Haiti, whom he had met while volunteering with Project Medishare in a field hospital following the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[7]
Trainer later directed and produced media associated with subsequent Global Citizen Festival broadcasts and post-event productions.
Global Citizen has since reported commitments totaling more than $40 billion toward anti-poverty initiatives worldwide.[8]
Peak Mind
Following his work with Global Citizen, Trainer founded Peak Mind, a media and events platform focused on human connection, wellbeing, and performance.[9]
Peak Mind launched with an event featuring the 14th Dalai Lama in California in 2015. The event was covered by Rolling Stone.[10]
Trainer later hosted conversations and live events featuring public figures including Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and Gabrielle Bernstein.
Peak Mind also expanded into podcasting, with guests including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and the 14th Dalai Lama.
Writing and speaking
Trainer is the author of Resonance: The Art and Science of Human Connection, published in 2026 by BenBella Books.[11]
His work and commentary on human connection, wellbeing, and social impact have been profiled or discussed in publications including Forbes, Entrepreneur, Inc., and Yoga Journal.[12][13][14]
In a 2017 Forbes feature, Trainer discussed how his father’s experience with dementia influenced his work in social enterprise and cognitive wellbeing.[15]
Trainer has delivered talks and keynote addresses at organizations and institutions including the United Nations, Google, Harvard University, and Summit Series.[16]
Recognition
Trainer is a Fulbright Scholar and former Columbia University Earth Institute fellow.
He was named to the BizBash Event Industry Innovator Hall of Fame, an industry recognition program honoring professionals in experiential events and live production.[17]
