Draft:Lady K

Lady K

Lady K is a French visual artist and writer, living and working in Paris, France.

Early life

From an early age, Lady K developed a strong interest in drawing and painting. During primary school, she was particularly interested in Cubism and Surrealism, and spent much of her time drawing manga characters. She grew up in a culturally diverse environment influenced by both European and Asian cultures, which later informed her artistic practice.

A decisive moment occurred when a classmate returned to school with a drawing that impressed her greatly. She then decided to draw “as well as, or better than” that classmate, marking the beginning of her sustained engagement with visual creation.

Education

In 2000, Lady K entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, from which she graduated in 2007.

She subsequently completed two master’s degrees at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne: • a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and Contemporary Creation, supervised by Françoise Parfait; • a Master’s degree in Sociology of Art, supervised by Christophe Genin.

Career

Beginnings in writing and graffiti

Lady K discovered writing and graffiti at a very young age. She made her first tags while still in middle school. She describes writing as a form of urban scarification, comparable in visual impact to advertising panels but without commercial intent.

Her engagement with writing was also motivated by a desire to assert herself in a male-dominated environment. She considers writing not as vandalism but as an artistic practice that uses letters as autonomous visual forms.

Her most intensive period of writing activity began in 1997. By her second year at the Beaux-Arts, she had fully committed herself to writing in urban space. During this period, she took significant risks, including a serious accident involving a third rail in the Paris metro, in which she injured her hand and narrowly avoided being struck by a train.

Lady K distinguishes her practice from traditional graffiti and uses the term “writting” to describe a rigorous and disciplined exploration of letters rather than decorative graffiti.

Studio practice and artistic research

Alongside her urban practice, Lady K developed a studio-based body of work involving painting, sculpture, photography, and video. She devised her own techniques, including droping, a method consisting of spraying circular forms of paint to produce diffusion and expansion effects.

Her work frequently incorporates language, multilingual text, and watercolour, and questions the place of painting within street art. She often documents her urban actions through photography and video, sometimes performing interventions during daylight hours, in contrast to the traditionally nocturnal nature of graffiti.

She also developed processes that bridge street and gallery spaces, such as installing canvases on walls, painting murals over them, and later recreating these works on canvas for exhibition.

Artistic style and approach

Signature and formal evolution

Since the late 1990s, Lady K has continuously transformed her signature. She has experimented with fingerprints, inflated or padded lettering, and varying orientations of her name, allowing for multiple readings and directions within the work.

Over time, her signature incorporated references to scientific formulas and mathematical theorems, reflecting her belief that art should engage with life, knowledge, and scientific thought.

Artistic and theoretical position

Lady K defines urban writing as neither figurative nor purely abstract, but as a practice based on abstract signs that convey ideas inherent in language itself. She conceives the city as a collective textual space and a surface for visual poetry.

She uses the term “supracalligrammalistic” to describe writing that functions simultaneously as text and image in the urban environment. For her, writing constitutes both a critique of urban life and an invitation to rethink the city.

Her work also asserts a strong feminine presence in public space. She is known for painting walls while wearing dresses, high heels, and wide-brimmed hats, deliberately challenging conventional representations of graffiti writers. Her performance videos, widely shared online, further blur the boundaries between street art, performance, and visual art.

Activism and intellectual work

In 2015, Lady K wrote an artistic manifesto centred on universal happiness, gender and racial equality, and education, drawing inspiration from the pedagogy of Maria Montessori. Her reflections address architecture, politics, economics, communication, and social organisation, emphasising awareness, knowledge, and understanding.

In 2019, following the appearance of anti-femicide posters in Paris, she participated in actions to repair and re-paste feminist slogans, notably alongside artist and activist Marguerite Stern, combining artistic practice and political engagement.

Writing and documentation

While completing her master’s degree in sociology of art, Lady K travelled across Europe to interview artists and writers. She contributed articles and interviews to platforms such as Paris Tonkar, Hiya, and Urban Art Paris, participating in the documentation and critical discourse surrounding writing as an artistic practice.
