Jonathan Low is an American recording engineer, mixer, and producer. He is a Grammy Award winner known for his work with Aaron Dessner at Long Pond Studio on albums by Taylor Swift and The National.[1][2]

Early life and education

Low attended Drexel University, where he enrolled in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. He graduated from the university's Music Industry program in 2008.[3] Following graduation, he began his career as the first intern at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia.[4]

Career

Philadelphia

Low began his career engineering at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood under producer Brian McTear.[5] A 2013 JUMP Philly profile identified his work on Hoots & Hellmouth's debut album as his breakout project.[5] The profile also documented his engineering for Weathervane Music's Shaking Through sessions—featuring Ava Luna and Auctioneer—and production work with Restorations and Bleeding Rainbow.[5] During this time, Jonathan also mixed You're Gonna Miss It All (2014) by Modern Baseball.[6]

Long Pond Studio

In the mid-2010s, Low became the primary engineer at Long Pond Studio, a residential recording facility in the Hudson Valley owned by Aaron Dessner. He relocated to the Hudson Valley during the studio's construction in 2015, and was involved in its design and technical buildout from an early stage.[7] He was the lead engineer for The National's Sleep Well Beast (2017), which received the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.[7] He subsequently engineered and mixed the band's I Am Easy to Find (2019) and First Two Pages of Frankenstein (2023).[1]

Taylor Swift

Low engineered and mixed Taylor Swift's folklore (2020) and evermore (2020) at Long Pond Studio.[12][13] folklore won Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.[14] Jonathan also engineered some tracks on The Tortured Poets Department.[15][16] He also worked on Swift's song "Carolina"[17], tracks on Red (Taylor's Version)[18][19], and Fearless (Taylor's Version)[20].

Collaborations and contemporary work

Low has been a collaborator with Maya Hawke, engineering and mixing her albums Moss (2022) and Chaos Angel (2024).[21] He co-produced Hawke's album Maitreya Corso (2026) with Christian Lee Hutson.[22]

His mixing and engineering credits include Saint Cloud (2020) by Waxahatchee;[23] Life on Earth (2022) by Hurray for the Riff Raff;[24] Sahar (2022) by Tamino;[25] "In the Living Room" by Maggie Rogers;[26] and Nap Eyes' Snapshot of a Beginner (2020),[27] Craig Finn's Always Been (2025)[28], and The Paper Kites' If You Go There, I Hope You Find It (2026)[29].

Contemporary classical

Low produced, engineered, and mixed eighth blackbird's Filament (2015), which won the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.[30][2]

He collaborated with composer Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion on Rectangles and Circumstance (2024), which won the same category at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.[31][2]

Technical approach

Low has discussed his technical practice in interviews with Tape Op and Sound on Sound. He has described his approach to mixing as an ongoing process running in parallel with recording rather than as a discrete final stage, aiming to maintain sonic cohesion throughout production.[32] He is known for working primarily in the box while selectively incorporating hardware units including the Eventide H3000 and the Thermionic Culture Culture Vulture for tone shaping.[32]
