Joseph Swanson is a fictional character in the American animated sitcom Family Guy. He is a hyper-masculine, paraplegic police officer in the Quahog Police Department. The character is voiced by Patrick Warburton and created and designed by series creator Seth MacFarlane. He is married to Bonnie Swanson and has two children, Susie and Kevin, and live in 33 Spooner Street neighbouring the Griffin family.^[1]

Joe is a police officer paralysed from the waist down and is best friends with Peter Griffin, Cleveland Brown and Quagmire.^[2] The nature of his paralysis is changed throughout the show, originally he claims he slid off a roof during a standoff with the Grinch.^[3] However, he reveals this was a lie and the actual cause was that he was exposed during an undercover infiltration of a heroin operation and was shot by Bobby "The Shirt" Briggs.^[4] Later, Joe does regain movement in his legs; however, this was all reverted by the end of the episode.^[5]

He first makes an appearance in the show when Peter is searching for a new teammate for an upcoming softball game and he eventually convinces Joe to play after learning he played baseball in college, unaware that he is in a wheelchair. Despite him being wheelchair bound, Joe proves to be a good player and helps the team win. After Peter gets jealous of Joe's popularity, he attempts to stop a bank robbery; however, he gets himself and Brian taken hostage and Joe eventually convinces the robbers to surrender and is hailed as a hero.^[3]

Joe and his family live on Spooner Street in the fictional town of Quahog, Rhode Island, which is modelled after Providence, Rhode Island.^[6][7] When first appearing his wife, Bonnie Swanson, was pregnant and that would become a running gag until she eventually gave birth to Susie Swanson.^[8] Joe also has a son named Kevin Swanson. His mother is unnamed and only has one brief appearance, where it is shown she too is in a wheelchair and resembles him.^[9] His father, Bud, makes one appearance and is voiced by Ed O'Neil.^[10] In his solitary appearance it is revealed he and Joe have an estranged relationship and it is revealed that Bud has made fun of handicapped people his whole life and Joe never told his father that he is in a wheelchair.^[11]

Joe Swanson is voiced by actor Patrick Warburton, whose signature deep, deadpan delivery was instrumental in shaping the character's persona.^[12] Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has noted that Joe's intensity was designed to contrast with Peter Griffin's lethargy.^[13] Over the course of the series, however, the development of the character took a darker, more comedic shift. While early seasons emphasized his heroism, later seasons have moved toward his emotional instability, his crumbling marriage to Bonnie and the irony of his tactical incompetence in personal situations in contrast to his professional rigidity.
