Jacob Sutton (born 1979) is a British photographer and filmmaker.[1] He is known for his large-scale fashion films, which are characterised by an emphasis on movement and form.[2]

Early life and education

Sutton was born and raised in Bath, and moved to London to study photography at London College of Communication.[2][1] After graduating, he entered the fashion and photography industry, initially working as an assistant to still-life photographer Dan Tobin-Smith.[3]

Career

After assisting, Sutton launched his career in the early 2000s, gaining early recognition in 2006 with an editorial for Another Man, collaborating with Gary Card and Thom Murphy.[2][1] His work has since been featured in publications including AnOther, T Magazine, Vogue Italia, Numéro, L'Uomo Vogue, and i-D.[2][4] In 2010, Sutton expanded into film direction, developing a focus on movement through projects such as The A-Z of Dance and collaborations with the Paris Opera Ballet.[5][1] In 2012, he created a viral film for NOWNESS featuring professional snowboarder William Hughes in a bespoke LED suit, amassing millions of views.[6][7]

His commercial work includes an aerobatics film for Prada and fragrance campaigns featuring cliff diving and downhill skateboarding for Chanel, alongside campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Nike, Burberry, Lacoste, YSL Beauty, Estée Lauder, Hermès, Adidas, Jacques Marie Mage, and Apple.[2][8] Sutton has also directed short films, including Desert Heart and Hidden Depth, the latter of which was selected for the Raindance Film Festival in 2024.[9][10]
