Benjamin Tan, known professionally by his anglicised Mandarin name, Jac Min・竭明, is a Singaporean director of films and commercials[2][3] whose work is characterised by an emphasis on timeless visual composition and narrative-driven storytelling. His projects frequently employ rhythmic visual patterns and tightly constructed narratives, resulting in works that integrate sensory and cerebral, conceptual elements.[4]

He is a firm believer in marrying artistry with industry.

With a background in post-production, motion graphics and lighting, he works across multiple media and techniques. His practice often combines practical effects with computer-generated imagery and animation, reflecting a hybrid approach to visual production.

His creative approach prioritises narrative clarity and structural coherence, with complexity emerging from the application of simple foundational storytelling principles. His work consistently demonstrates a deliberate and methodical approach to storytelling, focusing on relatable, grounded moments intended to foster audience engagement.

Career

Jac Min's work has been screened at international film festivals including Kinofest (2009), the Asian Hotshots Berlin Festival for Film and Video Art, the Seoul International Extreme-Short Image and Film Festival (2010), and the Asian Film Symposium (2007). His work has also been curated by organisations such as onedotzero and the National Museum of Singapore, and exhibited internationally, including at TWEAK II in Ireland. His feature documentary コーダ Coda[5] won the Audience Choice Award[6][7][8] at the 36th Singapore International Film Festival.

In addition to his independent work, he has produced commercial projects[9] that have received industry recognition[10] at award shows including the Cannes Lion, Spikes Asia, and the Gong Awards.

In 2008, he was awarded the Media Education Scheme Scholarship by IMDA, Singapore, for his undergraduate film studies. Following the completion of his undergraduate research programme at Nanyang Technological University in 2010, he was named an NTU President's Research Scholar for his film Xiang/Yan, completed under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Michael Tan . In 2017, he served as a jury member for the Digital category at the Crowbar Awards.

He is a founding partner of Semicolon[2], a boutique production company with a focus on commercials and branded content.
