Graphy is a subsidiary of Unacademy (operating as Sorting Hat Technologies Pvt. Ltd.), one of India's educational technology companies.[3]

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, Graphy was founded in 2020 by Sumit Jain, Sushil Kumar, Shobhit Bakliwal, and Fiona Leong.[3] The platform operates within the creator economy sector, alongside international platforms such as Kajabi, Teachable, and Hotmart.[4]

History

Founding and early development (2020)

Graphy was launched in June 2020 as an internal product of the Unacademy Group. Gaurav Munjal, Unacademy's co-founder and CEO, announced it on social media. The product was developed by a separate founding team—Sushil Kumar, Sumit Jain, Shobhit Bakliwal, and Fiona Leong—operating within the Unacademy Group.[3]

The platform was initially structured as a mobile-first content marketplace under a business-to-consumer (B2C) model. Subject-matter experts, influencers, and public figures could publish content—referred to as "graphies"—combining video, audio, images, and quizzes in a chapter-based format.[5]

Early creators on the platform included a chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, comedian Tanmay Bhat (who created Graphy Originals), and others.[5][6]

Pivot to SaaS (2021)

In 2021, Graphy transitioned from a B2C content marketplace to a software as a service (SaaS) model. Under the revised model, creators could establish branded online schools, host cohort-based courses, conduct live sessions, and sell digital products through white-labelled websites and mobile applications.[7][8]

Acquisition of Spayee (October 2021)

On 11 October 2021, Graphy acquired Spayee, a Noida-based SaaS course platform, for US$25 million (approximately ₹187.8 crore).[9][10] The acquisition was described by the Unacademy Group as its tenth acquisition overall.[6]

Spayee was founded in 2014 by Sandeep Singh, Gourav Kakkar, Aniruddha Singh, and Vijay Singh, and pivoted to its SaaS form in 2018.[11] At the time of acquisition, over 2,000 creators and businesses had used the platform to launch their own course websites.[9]

Acquisition of Scenes (June 2023)

On 21 June 2023, Graphy acquired Scenes (formerly Avalon Meta), a Singapore-based community management platform.[12][13] The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Scenes was founded in 2019 by Varun Mayya, Abhinav Arora, and Shashank Udupa. The platform helped creators to manage and monetise online communities.[13] Prior to the acquisition, Scenes had received funding from investors including Blume Ventures, Better Capital, and others.[14]

Corporate context: Unacademy and upGrad (2026)

As of early 2026, Graphy operates as a subsidiary of Unacademy. In March 2026, upGrad entered into a term sheet to acquire Unacademy in an all-stock share-swap transaction.[15] The proposed deal, if completed, would bring Graphy into the upGrad Group's portfolio of educational technology platforms.

Ltd.), headquartered at Maruthi Infotech Centre, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.[4] As of April 2025, Tracxn reported the company employed 48 people, representing a 48% decline in headcount compared to April 2024, reflecting broader cost-rationalisation efforts across the Unacademy Group.[4]

Graphy has not raised independent external funding rounds; it is backed entirely through the Unacademy Group's capital.[4] Graphy's verticals were reported to be generating positive cash flows as of 2025, with CEO Sumit Jain having previously disclosed the platform had achieved operational profitability.[17]
