The Ghirardelli Building is a historic commercial building at 415-431 Jackson Street in the Jackson Square Historic District of San Francisco, California. It is San Francisco Designated Landmark No. 15, designated February 3, 1969, with assessor's block and lot 196/22p.[1]
History
In 1853, Domingo Ghirardelli opened a chocolate factory on the first floor of the brick Italianate building at 415-431 Jackson Street, and by the 1860s was operating his chocolate and coffee business there. Ghirardelli moved his wife and family to the building's second floor - a typical arrangement for businessmen of the period, in which upper floors of commercial premises served as flats for owners or other prosperous citizens.[2]
Other 1860s tenants included the Buena Vista Vinicultural Society, winemakers and dealers, and Eco Della Patria, the Italian weekly newspaper. Ghirardelli's company purchased the Pioneer Woolen Mill in 1893 and moved operations to the current site of Ghirardelli Square the following year.[3]
Architecture
The building is an Italianate brick commercial structure characteristic of the Jackson Square Historic District. The roof line retains a small moulding, which according to the building's landmark designation report is all that remains of its once prominent dentillated cornice.[4]
Designation and protection
The Ghirardelli Building is also a contributing resource to the Jackson Square Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 18, 1971 (NRHP #71000186).[5]
