GeoShake is an open-source earthquake early warning sensor network developed by Appflows Technology Inc., based in Antalya, Turkey. Founded in 2025, the project uses a dense network of low-cost MEMS accelerometers to detect P-waves and issue alerts seconds before strong shaking arrives.[1] The project distributes a companion mobile application on both Google Play[2] and the Apple App Store.[3]
Technical approach
Rather than relying on a small number of expensive professional seismometers, GeoShake deploys large quantities of affordable sensor stations. Each GeoShake T1 device contains an ESP32-S3 microcontroller and four STMicroelectronics LSM6DSO 6-axis MEMS accelerometers sampling at 208 Hz. The four-sensor array reduces effective noise to approximately 35 ug/sqrt(Hz) through averaging.[1]
When a potential seismic event occurs, the system applies a correlation algorithm: if multiple devices within a geographic radius report similar acceleration signals within milliseconds, the system classifies the event as an earthquake rather than local noise. Data transmission uses the MQTT protocol over Wi-Fi with TLS encryption.[1]
Mobile application
GeoShake provides a companion mobile application for iOS[3] and Android[2] that delivers real-time earthquake alerts via push notifications. The app includes a live seismic event map showing sensor station data, configurable alarm thresholds based on earthquake magnitude and distance, and support for four languages (English, Turkish, Spanish, and Indonesian). The app communicates with the sensor network over MQTT for sub-second alert delivery.[1]
Organization
GeoShake was founded in 2025 and is headquartered at Akdeniz University's Ulugbey Research and Development Center in the Konyaalti district of Antalya. The project collaborates with the university's Geophysics Department on algorithm validation and false alarm reduction research.[1]
All firmware, hardware schematics, mobile applications, and detection algorithms are released under the MIT License and hosted on GitHub.[4]
