Gareth Long (born 1979) is a Canadian contemporary artist whose work explores authorship, repetition, translation, and the structures of knowledge production. Working across installation, moving image, performance, and publishing, Long’s practice frequently engages literary sources and collaborative processes to examine how cultural meaning is produced and circulated.[1]

Early life and education

Long was born in Toronto, Canada. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Studies and Classical Civilizations from the University of Toronto and later completed a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the Yale School of Art.[1]

Work

Long’s work foregrounds processes of copying, rewriting, and reinterpretation, often drawing on literary sources such as Gustave Flaubert’s Bouvard et Pécuchet and Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote.[2] His projects frequently take the form of installations, publications, and collaborative or pedagogical structures that blur the boundaries between artwork, research, and teaching.[3]

A recurring concern in Long’s practice is the instability of authorship and the role of repetition in cultural production. Works such as Bouvard and Pécuchet’s Invented Desk for Copying explore the figure of the copyist as both a comic and critical model of knowledge-making.[4]

Long has held solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien, Austria[5] [6] [7]; The Blaffer Art Museum, Houston[8][9]; Oakville Galleries, Oakville[10][11]; the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge[12]; Kate Werble Gallery, New York[13]; Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto[14][15]; Galerie Bernhard, Zürich[16]; Michael Benevento Gallery, Los Angeles[17]; Super Dakota, Brussels[18]; SpazioA, Pistoia[19]; and TORRI, Paris[20]. His work has been shown at galleries and institutions such as MoMA PS1, Long Island City; The Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson; Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Denver; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Montreal; Artists Space, New York; Flat Time House, London; Spike Island, Bristol; Wiels, Brussels; Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; and Witte de With, Rotterdam.[1]

Collaborations

Long has collaborated with artists and writers including Liam Gillick, with whom he co-developed the exhibition and text Who Invented the Desk?.[21]

He has also worked with philosopher Simon Critchley and artist Derek Sullivan on publications and exhibition projects.[22]

Academic career

Long is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Visual Studies program at the University of Toronto Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.[1]
