Floatplane is a subscription-based video-on-demand platform launched in 2016. A subsidiary of Floatplane Media Inc., it was founded by Luke Lafreniere (CTO) and Linus Sebastian (CVO) of Linus Media Group. The platform has amassed over 50,000 subscribers as of February 2026.^[1]

Unlike venture-capital-backed platforms, Floatplane operates on a subscription-based model focused on an ad-free, sponsor-free user experience. Each creator is supported individually through direct subscriptions, a model similar to that of Patreon.

Linus Tech Tips used to be on Vessel until its closure in 2016,^[2][3] at which point the group migrated its early-access content to the linustechtips.com forums and called it Floatplane.^[4] Floatplane was initially established as a dedicated forum section titled "Floatplane Club,"^[5] featuring an icon of a floatplane in profile. Subscribers, referred to as "pilots," were granted access to a sub-forum that included the description "RIP Vessel, Yay Floatplane."^{[citation needed]} The section focused on user suggestions and community feedback, featuring discussion threads for videos released earlier than on the YouTube channels.

In April 2017, Floatplane Media Inc. was officially incorporated,^[6] and in the same month, Lafreniere hosted a video updating on the progress of the platform and its purpose.^[7] The service entered alpha phase and started inviting creators to test out the platform. In February, 2018, Floatplane was announced to launch on its own domain,^[8] and on December 28, 2018, the forum's "Floatplane Club" was beginning to be phased out in place of the new website.^[9][10]

On June 14, 2019, the Floatplane app was released on Google Play. The app was later released on the App Store on December 20, 2019, with Lafreniere expressing frustrations as the app was being rejected and delayed.^[11]

On December 16, 2019, a video was uploaded on Linus Tech Tips' YouTube channel announcing that Floatplane is in beta again and are accepting more creators.^[12] The service was marketed as a spiritual successor to Vessel and was positioned as a complement rather than a competitor to platforms like YouTube or Twitch. The platform's stated goal is to facilitate creative freedom through direct subscriber funding rather than a shared fee model, intended to encourage platform exclusives and direct interaction between creators and their communities.

On June 21, 2025, Lafreniere announced a collaboration with YouTuber and Open Sauce founder William Osman to create a similar service to Floatplane, called Sauce+.^[13] The service released with a similarly named app that focused on exclusives and originals created from Open Sauce live, as well as other content creators such as Michael Reeves (YouTuber).

Due to the subscription model, the platform does not utilize a recommendation algorithm. Users manually select which creators to support, granting them access to the creator's content library with support for resolutions up to 4K resolution. The platform includes features such as video watch history, a comment system, and live chat functionality during livestreams.

Floatplane utilizes a hybrid infrastructure according to OVHcloud, consisting of bare metal servers, Ceph, Rancher RKE2, and vRack private network, allowing for the fast distribution of high bit rate 1080p and 4K media.^[1]

While there is no publicly published number from LMG, the Linus Tech Tips channel has 38,762 subscribers as of February, 2026, and OVHcloud claims 50,000 subscribers on their case study of Floatplane.^[1]

Floatplane originally planned to launch a proprietary virtual private network service nicknamed FloatVPN. Although a prototype was reportedly developed in six hours, the project was later canceled due to legal and liability concerns.^[14]

Several content creators have established channels on the platform, with content ranging from technology and gaming to educational programming and 3D printing. These include founding creator Linus Tech Tips, as well as Forgotten Weapons, Jeff Geerling, DankPods, and The Mighty Jingles. The platform also hosts various independent networks and tech-focused creators such as Level1Techs, and Bitwit.
