FlightSimWeekend (FSWeekend) is a two-day flight simulator event that has taken place annually in the Netherlands since 2004. Since 2024, it has been widely considered the most heavily attended flight simulator event in the world.^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

For nearly three decades, FlightSimWeekend brings together enthusiasts, professionals and developers from all facets of flight simulation. Attendees of all ages and experience levels can attend the event and participate in various aviation and flight simulation activities ^[6][7].

During FlightSimWeekend, visitors have the opportunity to connect with the flight simulation communities, converse directly with the developers and test out latest flight simulation software and hardware, such as yokes, throttles, whole aircraft cockpits builds and joysticks ^[8][9]. Flight schools and educational organizations also attend to bridge the gap between flight simulation and real world flying ^[10].

Additionally, there are many opportunities to take a seat in a number of flight simulators based on both civil and military aircraft, such as a Cessna, Boeing, Airbus, or fighter jets.

The origins of the event stem from a number of Amsterdam-based Atari ST enthusiasts who discovered the game Flight Simulator in the 1980s. The enthusiasts organized themselves under the name FsFan. They met up, brought their own Ataris, and executed custom virtual flight plans in a standalone setting.^[11]

Subsequently, in the early 1990s, the idea for a Bulletin Board System (BBS) emerged. This allowed other enthusiasts, including those from abroad, to exchange information with each other. During this time, other FsFan groups were formed both in the Netherlands and abroad, organizing flight competitions together. The various groups of FsFans then organized "Interstate Races," which took place at the Aviodome aviation museum at Schiphol Airport, where the public could watch. Out of these races at the Aviodome, a plan was formed by the Friends of the Aviodome circle and various clubs to organize a flight simulator day for interested parties and flightsim enthusiasts. The first flight simulator day in the Aviodome took place on 4 October 1998. Due to the high level of interest, a new two-day FlightSimWeekend event was planned for 1999.^[11]

After Schiphol Airport announced expansion plans and required the Aviodome's space for this purpose, it was decided to build a new Aviodrome in Lelystad. In 2002, the final FlightSimWeekend was held at the Aviodome in Schiphol. In 2003, the new Aviodrome theme park opened in Lelystad. FlightSimWeekend moved along with it, after which the event took place annually at this new location in Flevoland between 2004 and 2026.

FlightSimWeekend 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.^[12] Following significant interest in the November 2022 edition, which drew around 3,500 visitors ^[13], it was decided for logistical reasons to move FlightSimWeekend from November to March.

The edition originally scheduled to take place in November 2023 was postponed to 16 & 17 March 2024. Organized under the new management of the Stichting FlightSimWeekend (FlightSimWeekend Foundation)^[14], it became the most attended edition since the event's inception, with nearly 5000 visitors.^[15] The 2025 and 2026 editions saw similar visitor numbers alongside an increase in international participants and visitors.^[16]

Due to the growth and increasing interest in the event, the FlightSimWeekend Foundation decided to relocate to a larger venue with more facilities. Starting from 2027, the event will be organized at Expo Houten in Houten, near Utrecht. The next edition is planned for 3 & 4 April 2027.^{[17][18][19][20][21][22][23]}

In January 2023 the FSWeekend organizer handed the reins over to two flight sim enthusiasts^[24], who brought passion and new vision to the event^[25]. Together with a small group of volunteers, they organized an event in March 2024. Followed by great success, and record breaking attendance ^[26], the small group of volunteers officially formed the FlightSimWeekend Foundation (Stichting FlightSimWeekend) in November 2024^[27]. With the support of sponsors and partners, the foundation was able to professionalize the event and strengthen the international community of flight simulation enthusiasts. Through online presence on social media like Instagram, Facebook, Discord, Twitter (X), YouTube, TikTok, the event grew in popularity, and expanded the exhibitor list (e.g. Honeycomb Aeronautical^[28], WinCtrl (formerly known as WinWing^[29])^[30], Meridian GMT^[31]) for the 2025 edition of FSWeekend.

In addition to organizing the two-day flight simulation event, FlightSimWeekend debuted their annual FSWeekend Captain's Dinner ^[32][33] on 14 March 2025, with support from Aerosoft Flight. In a joint effort between CruiseLevel, Threshold and FSElite, and in collaboration with FSWeekend, the organizations hosted the very first annual Flight Sim Awards ^[34][35] during Captain's Dinner.

The exponential growth of the event and the organization's efforts were reflected in the continued increase in event attendance and the participation of additional exhibitors^[36], such as Microsoft Flight Simulator ^[37], Moza Racing ^[38], and the return of X-plane ^[39] for FSWeekend 2027.
