Dover (also known as Dover London, DoverLDN, or Dover UK to distinguish themselves from the Spanish rock band of the same name) is a British indie rock band formed in East London in early 2026.[1][2] Led by frontman Lucas Kellar, the band's musical style has been described on the live circuit as an "eclectic, gritty and oddly-theatrical" sound originating out of the "Britainicana" movement.[1][2]
The five-piece group has established a presence across major London grassroots music spaces, frequently playing showcase gigs and indie-rock lineups.[2]
History
Formation and background (pre-2026)
Prior to the establishment of Dover, bassist Dori Konya and vocalist/guitarist Lucas Kellar performed together in Poledo, an East London post-punk and hardcore project named after a Dinosaur Jr. track.[3] Seeking a stylistic departure from their punk roots, Kellar envisioned a new project heavily influenced by British roots music and midwest emo, initially drawing inspiration from a local American band also named Dover.[3] This led to the creation of the British counterpart, using the online handles "DoverLDN" and "Dover London" to establish a distinct digital identity.[1]
London grassroots circuit (2026–present)
In early 2026, the project officially transitioned into a full live outfit on the London grassroots circuit. The band's early live tracking included a performance at the Camden venue Dingwalls 2, which debuted original material such as "They Will Grow," "Cytokines," "The Curb," and "Mitch".[4] Following these early appearances, the lineup underwent significant shifts. Fynn Gill, originally a guitarist, transitioned to drums to solidify the rhythm section alongside Konya.[3] To support their complex, theatrical arrangements, the band recruited rhythm guitarist Harry Haley and keyboardist Sophie Carpenter, both formerly of the pop-rock outfit Chauffeur.[3]
On 24 May 2026, Dover headlined a Ranga Records gig at the historic London live venue The Half Moon in Putney, performing alongside regional independent acts Idiocy and Gravel Mouth.[2] The performance showcased the band's self-styled "twee prog" indie-rock sound to a broader South West London audience.[2]
On 18 June 2026, the band transitioned into heavier billing, appearing at the Cart & Horses venue in Maryland, Stratford (famed as the historic birthplace of Iron Maiden).[1] Performing in the venue's basement showroom as part of a free-entry independent showcase, Dover shared a heavy rock and metal bill alongside blues-rock outfit The Furnival Brothers Band and post-hardcore group Barrow.[1]
Musical style and influences
Dover's musical style blends standard indie rock dynamics with progressive pop, a sound they occasionally refer to as "twee prog" in reference to its mixture of melodic pop hooks and structural experimentation.[3] Their live promotional literature characterizes their soundscapes as "eclectic, gritty and oddly-theatrical."[1][2] Lyrically, primary songwriter Lucas Kellar employs introspective themes, clinical imagery, and regional British pop-culture references.[4]
