Deepak Prabhakaran Menon is an Indian advocate, venture capitalist and actor. He is the Founding Partner of Wade Right Partners LLP/LLC and holds significant interests in several successful enterprises in Africa, Middle East, and Europe. He has also acted in Indian films and is known for his works primarily in Malayalam cinema.[1] He is among Indian Supreme Court lawyers to become a hero in the Malayalam movie industry.[2]
Background and family
Deepak Prabhakaran Menon was born into a Malayali family. His Father, T.K.Prabhakaran, is a prominent lawyer in Bombay High Court. His mother, Mrs Nalini Prabhakaran Menon is a film producer and cousin to Dr Sashi Tharoor.[3]
Early Life and Career
He did his schooling from Nath Valley School, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He completed his graduation in Political Science and Law with honours B.A LL.B(Hons) from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi. Later he completed his post-graduation in International Commercial Law & Public Procurement Law (LL.M) from the prestigious University of Nottingham, UK.
Legal Career
He began his legal career in the year 2007 as a full-time lawyer. In 2009, he was amongst the few legal professionals alongside the government officials to have been frequently engaged with WTO dispute proceedings in order to secure the interests of the Indian manufacturers and traders within WTO Trade law, at New Delhi. In 2010, he assisted the Standing Counsel for the State of Bihar before the Supreme Court of India in the case of corruption scandal titled “Fodder Scam” against the erstwhile Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav. In 2012, he represented C. K. Jaffer Sharief, former Indian Railway Minister of the Government of India, before the Supreme Court of India to acquit him of corruption charges during his tenure in office. He also assisted Senior Advocate Ranjit Kumar before the Supreme Court of India in the case confirming life imprisonment of the politician Anand Mohan Singh for instigating killing of Gopalganj district magistrate, G. Krishnaiah.
In 2019, he filed a review petition to challenge the landmark Supreme Court of India’s judgement which ruled that all Hindu pilgrims, regardless of gender, could enter the Sabarimala Temple.[4] The review petition titled, “Deepak Prabhakaran vs State of Kerala”, is listed before the nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court constituted exclusively to preside over the dispute with regard to the entry of women to Sabarimala.[5]
