Daniel Messé is an American composer, lyricist, singer-songwriter, and musician. He is a co-founder of the indie folk band Hem and composed the music for the musical Amélie, with lyrics co-written by Nathan Tysen.[1]

Messé earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College and an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.[2]

Messé co-founded the indie folk band Hem with guitarist Gary Maurer. The band received critical attention for its orchestral folk sound. The Washington Post reviewed Hem's 2004 album Eveningland, identifying Messé as one of the band's songwriters and keyboardists.[3] In 2013, NPR Music featured Hem in a Tiny Desk Concert and discussed the band's arrangements and songwriting.[4]

In 2009, Hem composed the score for Twelfth Night for The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production starring Anne Hathaway and Audra McDonald.[4]

Messé composed the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Nathan Tysen for Amélie, based on the 2001 French film. The musical premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2015 before opening on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre in 2017.[5] The production received coverage from Variety and other theatre publications, which discussed Messé's score as part of their reviews of the musical.[1]

The London production of Amélie received three Laurence Olivier Award nominations. The Original London Cast Recording was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.[6]

Messé received the Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre.[7]

He has also received the Jonathan Larson Grant, the ASCAP/Frederick Loewe Award, and the E.Y. "Yip" Harburg Fellowship.[7]

Messé has written musicals for TheatreWorks USA with lyricist Mindi Dickstein.[7]
