Daniel Atz (born 1 September 1988) is an American-Luxembourgish entrepreneur and documentary producer. He founded LuxCitizenship in 2016, a consultancy that assists United States applicants for Luxembourgish citizenship by descent, and later launched Citizenship.EU. His work has been covered by outlets in Luxembourg, Germany, Brazil and Italy, often in the context of rising U.S. demand for European citizenship during the Trump era.[1][2][3][4][5]
Early life and education
Atz was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Loyola University Chicago and a Certificate in Advanced Business Chinese from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He also studied European business law at the École Supérieure du Commerce Extérieur in Paris.[1]
In 2014, Atz recovered Luxembourgish nationality through his great-grandmother, Marguerite Kruchten, who had emigrated from Esch-sur-Alzette to the United States after World War I.[6][1] In 2017, after an RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg broadcast about his work, a relative in Luxembourg recognised his great-grandmother in a photograph; the subsequent family reunion in Esch-sur-Alzette was documented by RTL.[6]
Career
Early career
Before founding LuxCitizenship, Atz worked at the Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce (BelCham), where he supported the entry of more than 200 Belgian small and medium-sized enterprises into the United States market.[7]
LuxCitizenship and Citizenship.EU
Atz founded LuxCitizenship in November 2016 to assist members of the Luxembourgish diaspora in reclaiming dual nationality.[8] As of 2024, the French-language daily L'essentiel reported that the firm had assisted more than 2,210 Americans in obtaining Luxembourgish citizenship.[8] He subsequently launched Citizenship.EU, an online platform that uses artificial intelligence to help users assess eligibility for citizenship by descent across the 27 European Union member states.
Media coverage and research
Atz has been profiled by L'essentiel in two dedicated articles, which described him as "building a bridge between America and Luxembourg".[1][8] He has been quoted in Luxembourg Times, Virgule, Contacto, Saarbrücker Zeitung, Lëtzebuerger Land and Brazilian outlets including CNN Brasil, typically in reporting on the increase in U.S. applications for European citizenship.[2][3][9][4][10][5] Several of these outlets have described the post-2016 rise in U.S. citizenship applications as a "Trump effect".[3][4]
Through the American Emigration Revue, a research and editorial project he founded in 2025, Atz has written on what he calls an "Exit Mindset" among Americans pursuing a second passport as a form of political "insurance".[3]
Documentary filmmaking
Atz produced the documentary Lëtzebuerger an Argentinien ("Luxembourgers in Argentina"), about 19th-century Luxembourgish emigration to Argentina. The film was released by Connaissance Films and premiered on 23 November 2025 at Ciné Utopia in Luxembourg City, where it was Luxembourg's official selection for the 10th European Arthouse Cinema Day.[11][12]
Institutional relations
In 2022, Atz was part of a delegation that visited Rio Negro (Paraná, Brazil), a municipality with a historical Luxembourgish-descendant community.[13]
