Buildertrend is a privately held American software company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. It develops cloud-based construction management software for residential builders, remodelers and specialty contractors.[1]
Buildertrend is a platform that includes project scheduling, financial tracking and communication for construction teams.[2][3]
History
Buildertrend was founded by Dan Houghton and brothers Jeff and Steve Dugger in Omaha in 2006.[4]
Buildertrend reached 500 full-time employees in September 2019.[5]
In December 2020, Buildertrend received its first institutional investment from Bain Capital Tech Opportunities and HGGC.[6]
In February 2021, Buildertrend acquired CoConstruct, a Virginia-based construction management platform for custom home builders and remodelers.[7][8][9] The combined company served approximately 21,000 customers and more than 1 million users over the lifetime of the company.[10]
The merger increased Buildertrend’s presence in the residential construction software market.[11] [12]
Through the acquisition of CoConstruct, Buildertrend also incorporated CBUSA. CBUSA is a group purchasing organization that facilitates collective buying contracts for building materials and supplies. CBUSA represents about 850 builders, 1,900 local vendor partners and more than 28 national brand partnerships across the United States.[13]
Products
Buildertrend is a cloud-based software platform used to manage residential construction projects through all stages, including pre-sales, planning, execution, and post-construction.[1]
Independent software reviews highlight the following core capabilities:
- Estimating and bid management: Provides tools for creating proposals, managing bid invitations and tracking vendor responses.[14]
- Scheduling and progress tracking: Includes daily logs, task assignment, and workforce scheduling.[14]
- Change-order management and invoicing: Offers real-time updates to budgets and contracts with integrated billing and approval tools.[15]
- Client communication and portals: Supports centralized messaging, document sharing and visibility into project milestones through client-facing dashboards.[15]
- Warranty and post-construction tracking: Enables management of service requests and long-term client support.[16]
The platform has also been evaluated in academic research focused on the efficiency of project management tools.[17]
The platform integrates with third-party systems such as QuickBooks, Xero and Gusto for accounting and payroll. Contractors can upload photos, record voice notes and log job site updates directly from the mobile app.[16]
Partnerships
In 2021, Buildertrend announced a partnership with Lowe’s to provide purchasing benefits for users through the MyLowe’s Pro Rewards program.[18]
Reception
Buildertrend includes scheduling tools and features relevant to residential construction management including scheduling, financial tracking and communication, particularly for residential contractors.[2][3] Buildertrend has also been profiled by business intelligence platforms such as PitchBook, and Tracxn, which provide independent data on its funding history, acquisitions and market position.[19][20]
Following Buildertrend’s 2021 acquisition of CoConstruct, while the merger expanded Buildertrend's market share in residential construction management software, it was characterized as a consolidation in the construction-tech market.[21][22]
Buildertrend’s continues to grow its workforce and role as a technology employer in Omaha, Nebraska.[23][4]
Recognition
Buildertrend maintains workplace policies such as flexible scheduling and performance-based bonuses. The company was certified as a “Great Place to Work” in 2023 and 2025.[24][25]
Buildertrend has received Stevie Awards for Customer Service from the American Business Awards, earning Bronze honors in 2019 and 2021, Silver honors in 2020 and 2022, and a Gold award in 2023.[26][27]
