Bookimed is a Ukrainian online medical tourism platform that connects patients with clinics and doctors abroad.[1][2] The service is free for patients, who pay only the clinic's price; Bookimed earns a commission from the clinics.[2]

History

Bookimed was founded in 2014 in Kyiv, Ukraine, by Yevhenii Kozlov and Ievgen Khotianov.[3][4] The platform modelled on the accommodation-booking service Booking.com, and began working with a number of Israeli and German clinics.[3]

In December 2017, the investment fund AVentures Capital invested US$0.5 million, the only publicly known funding round.[5] In 2018, the platform reached about 100,000 patients and about 400,000 by mid-2020.[4]

In 2018, the company was included in a list of five Ukrainian medical startups "that the world learned about", compiled by the organisation Innovation House.[6] In 2019, Bookimed appeared in the "Top 100 most respected IT employers in Ukraine" ranking by the outlet MC Today.[7]

According to Forbes Ukraine, the pandemic cut the medical-tourism client flow by roughly 70%, and some competitors left the market.[8] Bookimed's 2020 revenue was about US$1.5 million, and headcount fell from 130 to 80. The founders described the period as a "forced reset" focused on customer experience and automation.[8]

After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the company continued operating from its Kyiv head office and ended all cooperation with the Russian market.[9] Also more than 500,000 patients had used the platform by mid-2022, and over 2,000 new doctors joined after the invasion.[9] As of 2026, the platform served more than one million patients and worked with over 1,500 clinics in more than 30 countries.[10]

In March 2026, Bookimed received Global Healthcare Accreditation's Medical Travel Facilitator Certification.[11][12]

Operations

Bookimed operates on a cost per action (CPA) basis: the patient pays only for the services of the chosen clinic, with no patient-side markup.[13] The service provides clinic selection based on verified patient reviews, treatment-cost coordination, trip arrangement and patient support. As a result, doctor-consultants make up a significant part of the company's staff.[14]

Bookimed also takes part in the charity project #ЧашкаКофе run by television presenter Dmytro Komarov, helping participants find treatment options free of charge.[15]

Bookimed's patients come from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.[16] In 2018, about 60% of patients came from CIS countries, and the main treatment destinations were Israel, Germany, Turkey, India and Spain.[17] At that time, about 80% of enquiries concerned cancer treatment, followed by neurosurgery and orthopaedic procedures.[18] According to the company, as of 2026 its main specialties include plastic surgery, dentistry, oncology, aesthetic medicine, neurology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, reproductive medicine and urology.[16]
