Benjamin Mehrer is a Canadian human resources professional, community volunteer, and political candidate from Abbotsford, British Columbia. He was a candidate for the Abbotsford Board of Education in a 2025 by-election and is a candidate in the 2026 Abbotsford school board election.[1][2]

Mehrer works in human resources and people development and has been involved with community organizations in the Fraser Valley. He serves on the board of directors of Archway Community Services and on the council of the Company of Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs (CYPE), a program of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.[3][4]

Early life and education

Mehrer was born and raised in Abbotsford, British Columbia.[4] He attended public schools in the Abbotsford School District before attending the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).

Mehrer graduated from UFV with a Bachelor of Integrated Studies and a minor in communications.[4]

Career

Mehrer works in human resources and people development. He has worked as a Market People Manager for a McDonald's franchise organization operating restaurants in Abbotsford.[4]

His professional responsibilities have included recruitment, employee training and development, team development, and community engagement.[4]

Community involvement

Mehrer has been involved with nonprofit and community organizations in Abbotsford.

Archway Community Services

Mehrer serves as a member of the board of directors of Archway Community Services, a nonprofit social service organization based in Abbotsford.[3]

Company of Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs

Mehrer is a council member of the Company of Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs (CYPE), a program associated with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.[4]

The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce's 2025 annual report listed Mehrer as a member of the 2025–26 CYPE Council.[5]

Political activity

2025 Abbotsford school board by-election

Mehrer was one of four candidates who sought election as a trustee of the Abbotsford Board of Education in a by-election held on October 11, 2025.[1][6]

The other candidates were Arsh Kaler, Tanya Coghill, and Graeme Hutchison.[1] Fraser Valley Today described Mehrer and Kaler as youth advocates during its coverage of the campaign.[7]

Kaler won the by-election with 2,908 votes. Tanya Coghill received 1,290 votes, Mehrer received 356 votes, and Hutchison received 276 votes.[8]

2026 Abbotsford school board election

In June 2026, Mehrer announced that he would again seek election to the Abbotsford Board of Education in the October 2026 local election.[2]

His campaign identified student achievement, mental health and well-being, engagement with families and educators, career and post-secondary preparation, and fiscal accountability as areas of focus.[9]
