Bebashi – Transition to Hope is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally founded as Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Issues (BEBASHI), it provides HIV/AIDS case management, sexual health services, breast health programs, hunger relief, and social services primarily to low-income communities of color.[1] It is described as the first African-American organization in the United States to address the AIDS crisis and the second-oldest AIDS service organization in the Philadelphia region.[2]
History
Bebashi was founded in 1985 by Rashidah Abdul-Khabeer and Wesley Anderson in response to the rising incidence of HIV/AIDS among African Americans in Philadelphia.[3] The name "BEBASHI" was an acronym for Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Issues; it was later changed to Bebashi – Transition to Hope to broaden the organization's reach and avoid limiting its identity to a single community or diagnosis.[3] In 1998, the organization moved to a facility on Spring Garden Street, placing it closer to the lower-income communities it primarily served.[4] In April 2025, Bebashi relocated its headquarters to 4101 Woodland Avenue in University City, Philadelphia.[5] In January 2024, Sebrina Tate was appointed as the organization's first President and Chief Executive Officer.[5] That same year, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health awarded Bebashi a $1 million housing grant to expand support services for people living with HIV.[3]
Services
Bebashi offers free HIV and STI testing and counseling, PrEP for uninsured individuals, medical case management for HIV-positive clients, breast health referrals for uninsured and underinsured women, an emergency food pantry, and a resource navigation program.[6][4] The organization reports serving more than 20,000 people annually.[1]
