The Apollo Chorus was founded in 1872 in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire, "in an effort to restore civic pride and boost the morale of Chicagoans following incredible devastation". Originally called the Chicago Apollo Club or Apollo Musical Club of Chicago (see 2), the Apollo Chorus was one of many clubs established in the late 19th century under the name “Apollo,” for the Greek god of music, art and medicine. Originally an all male singing society, in x year it expanded to include women. O

Prior to the Fire, the City had many neighborhood and ethno-centric choruses, but in time each of these have ceased to exist, leaving The Apollo Chorus as the oldest musical organization in Chicago.

The first concert of the Apollo Club was January 1873. At the time membership was limited to 500 people, and the roster was nearly full.^[1] Apollo has produced the Chicago Messiah every December since 1879.

For the first 70 years of it's existence the Apollo Chorus collaborated regularly with the Chicago Symphony Orchestera.(4) The Chorus still collaborates intermittently performing Mozart's requiem at Ravinia etc (Look up dates)

The Apollo Chorus performed at the dedication of many landmark spaces in Chicago. The Apollo Club was part of the 5000 member "Columbian Chorus" that performed John Knowles Paine’s “Columbian March and Hymn” at the inauguration of the Woman’s Building at the Columbian Exposition. The Chorus also celebrated the opening of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan’s Auditorium Theatre on December 9, 1889. Tomlins led the Club in the “Hallellujah” chorus from Handel's Messiah, and, later that month, presented the complete oratorio in the new hallat the Auditorium Theater.
