Anyland was a virtual reality sandbox platform developed by Philipp Lenssen and Scott Lowe, published through Steam Greenlight and released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on October 6, 2016..[1] Described as "an open virtual reality universe," the platform allowed users to create 3D objects, build environments, script interactive behaviors, and socialize with other players entirely within VR.[2][3] It supported the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift (with Oculus Touch), and Windows Mixed Reality headsets via SteamVR, and could also be explored via PC and keyboard in a non-VR desktop mode.[3]
Anyland was the VR successor to Manyland, a 2D browser-based sandbox MMO by the same developers.[3] Originally priced at US$11.99, the game later transitioned to a free-to-play model.[4] It received "Very Positive" reviews on Steam, with 94% of approximately 389 user reviews being positive.[1] The platform was shut down on February 29, 2024, due to insufficient funding to cover rising server costs.[5]
Overview
Anyland's functionality is similar to games like Second Life and Rec Room allowing users to access user-generated "areas" created within the game[6], each area only has one instance that users can join to socialize in as their avatars. [7]
User generated content
Users can create a "Thing"[8] using a button on both their thumbs that resembles a ring. The creation interface contains a large array of shapes that users can rotate, position, scale, and color to create unique models. Functionality can be added to shapes using a simple in-game scripting language[9]
Closure
Philipp Lenssen announced on Nov 29, 2023 through a Steam community discussion that Anyland and it's sister game Manyland would be shut down due to budget issues.[10] As announced, the official multiplayer servers were taken offline on Feb 29, 2024.

Unfortunately, Anyland – the universe we lived, scripted & built together – had to close due to a lack of budget... Together, in the years from October 6th 2016 to February 29th 2024, we made over 10,000 areas... and countless memories & friendships.
