In September 2024, the UK Government declared its intention to nominate Professor Akande for election as a judge to the International Court of Justice for the term 2027 - 2035.[7]
Akande is a Member of Essex Court Chambers, London.[15] He has also acted as an advisor in cases before the UK national courts, including the UK Supreme Court and advised the UK Parliament's All Party Parliamentary Group on Drones.[16]

Ambassador’s Commendation, Government of Japan for his outstanding contribution to the progressive development of international law and support for Japan’s efforts in strengthening the rule of law (2024).[17]
